TCIA - USS Constellation climb

Tcia was great, I relly enjoyed seeing some of you guys again! We took some photos of the climb on the USS Constellation. Too many to post here so I put them on a website for everyone to see. You might want to make sure your monitor is set to at least 1024x768 to look at it.

Dave, that was awesome of you to put those pics up for all to see. It was a remarkable opportunity, wasn't it!!!!

I climbed the middle mast with Matt Mayo and some gal named Cheryl from Indiana. We got to the middle platform and found that there was no ladder to the top one :(

I guess that rigging crew still has some work to do!

ps- could people email you pics to add to that site, dave?

This afternoon I went to see Master and Commander. A wonderful movie. I might not be too objective though since I'm sucha fan of the books :)

One thing that I noticed that will help me the next time that I go up the ratlines is that the sailors in the movie straddled the vertical stays and went hand over hand on the vertical lines. They used the ratlines for steps of course.

The Surprise is a different class ship from the Constellation and built sixty years previous. There still was a lot of rigging on the deck. The opposing ship, Acheron, was more equal to the Constellation. I know that its' "just a movie" but Peter Weir made the details very accurate. Seeing the damage of a cannon ball flying straight down the deck is scary.

Any of the crew would have made excellent arbos. When called upon, they would go to work like "Smoke and oakum"as Lucky Jack Aubrey would say.

to be honest , sailing and tree rigging are almost the same . The winch , the direct line pulleys , I always looked to sailing as a reference for what I do . Look at the fishing pole , we got that idea from sailing , same as the winches . Cousins, tree work and sailors .

I just wanted to say thankyou to everyone responsible for allowing me and all the others to climb that day, that will always be a great memory. What a view it was. Special thanks to you Tom for the invitation.
