Help Wanted Bruthas:

Am playing with some concepts of animating knots; need opinions/ ideas please. Am trying to do so with more color, shadowing; and now transparency (to see to the blindside of another line), and button functionality strategies than i've usually seen; and in reuseable parts to cut down on work from knot to knot; all while keeping file size small..

i'm also trying to devise a slider that will take you any place in movie by dragging mouse across slider at bottom; but can't figure it out; but i always thought that would be a great way to view knots? So, presently just upgraded the Back button to take you 10 frames back in animation and stop, then hit play to go forward for when ya just can't get it. Also, right clicks gives about 10 progressive levels of zoom.

This is around 18k, but really the jacked bowline is also in it's library(that you don't see) adding to it's file size, i reused some of it's 'modular animation pieces'. Soon this will allow a menu of some knots, and the reuse each other's pieces, for a pretty small filesize over all; (i hope).

Of course this should be backed up with stopper for supporting human cargo; but am jsut happy to get it this far presently!

Distel and Schwab; is the latest rendition of smoother play, changed the buttons some; the big stumbling block has been a mouse-grabbable scrubber bar to move to any point in the movie; backward or forwards by end user. Then all that controlling a now externally loaded animation; rather than imbedded in same file as player.

In the long run this means that none of the animations on a menu would just load at first with player; they would be called; so smaller file size. Even if you did go thru and play all movies on upcoming menu (to theoretically make same file size as downloading whole thing to start with); the animations would download one by one when called, not all at once. All in the name of download speed etc.; and room to make things fancier, without losing that speed.

i been werking on Flash(right clickin will show that and zoom menu etc.) for a lil'over a year now; thank-you. i tried to learn ZBrush, KnotPlot ( and a few other things for this). Both seemed like more work for less control, larger file size; but maybe better color. So, been a long road; jsut to start off here!

At this rate; it will probably be awhile before i have any real amount of knots assembled; but these presently aren't the simplest knots/hitches either. The first 4 in Tautline animation came out to about 50 layers deep over a span of 800 frames. Am working on knots not being all in one program; but downloaded individually when called; and not be trying to balance such a monster all at once in authoring phase.

I didn't say it correctly in my last post - sorry. I think your knot animations are great and they helps fill in some that are not available at the site listed in my last post.

Those are superb links Spyder, well worth the time you've put in to make them. Put these on an instructional CD-Rom and you'll be quids in, i'd certainly buy one. Being involved in instructing and always being encouraged to use multimedia teaching aids your knot animations would be fantastic!

Hopes & Dreams

Thanks-

i could use more help. i've done some more knots here of the Square Family for the kids here; also there are certin lessons and patterns that carry over to all knotting IMLHO; in these simplest of knots. The part i need help with is feed back on a comparison of the 2 animation styles of the friction hitches to the square family please. knots extended.

i hope everyone is familiar with the treasures in my Knot Links Page; links stolen from many of your own postings from 10 years ago at ISA till now. Also, find that you can let mouse settle over a link, and a short description of content appears (without having to go to the page linked). This is especially useful when looking for certain knots, etc. and not having to open every link. It starts with general knots and goes to specialized and knot theory links.

Eternally in 1st place is the Proffeseur Grog's sight that you mentioned. The latest upgrade is great; and is under a new name by itself; not under the Grog site with his magic squares site and stereo art etc. as it had been. Because the knot site was so popular! If you link from my site to his; the MyTreeLessons logo(such as it is) appears at top of the page; courtesy of the Grog. i've talked to him on phone a couple of times, a very nice and learned man.

i don't seek to duplicate his works, and will focus mostly on 'Blue Collar'/ working knots; mostly towards arborist type utility. But, some overlap is sure to occur; and also if/when i make scaffold hitch i will make anchor; because A) after 6+ hours making scaffold; anchor might only take 1/2 hour (don't ya know it feels good to turn allthat time into 2 knots so quickly!) and B) to show the similarity of design lending understanding of l-earning 2 knots for 1 and similar mechanics.

i envision a knot sight of my own (all ways have); but to go beyond knots into knotting mechanics, learning groups of similar knots at once rather than 1 at a time; pulley (inline multiplication of force) theories and angular rope force (non-inline multiplication of force) of speed lines and line sweating. Also some history, lore and cross referancing (i don't think Grog had ABoK #'s in last site etc. when i started stewing on all this). Items such as 2Handing ya might not find anywhere else; and in such a gathering of all these wonderful rope things All with eye candy imageries of force flow thru a rope as a device, like the force of electricity through a wire device etc. Arborist rope tools (brakes, cams, pulleys, krabs etc.).

If all that leads to a bulk of knots in Flash; that i should go on to other knots for comprehensiveness; then i will focus on more 'matching' my efforts to other sites. 1 thing of consideration is i am using a different medium(Flash). Most sites are in raster graphics; that have larger file size, are freeze frame, and any enlargement gives less quality and larger file size. With Flash's vector art; we can have huge pix (especially for hard of seeing and kids) in brilliant / high quality and at a fast loading small file size (for dialup etc.). The small file sizes also leave room for fancy intro's, background etc.(but probably not backgorund on knots, as part of the 'trick' for less work is all the lines have shadows, the black background makes them disapear, unless the lines are over another/when they should have shadows!) Also, the mouse grab-able slider to go to anyplace in the animation is s/lightly better than the freeze frame points of his slideshow. All, in all; a different medium; perhaps more worthy of 'duplicating' knots on other sites. Though the authoring file of the Square family animation is 1/2 meg. the file you download to watch is ~22k(which in normal raster/photo graphics might be 1 small, fair quality pic, not a 1000 frames of them in motion) for 9 knots animated that will reatain file size and quality on any size screen, no loss at blowing up with zoom(right click animation and zoom 10 times or so!). The 7 animations on 1 page for Side Dutching a face and BarberChair Warning gives a fast loading, zoomable proof. i've all ways wanted to get these pictures out of my head for some years now of all the wonders of these things. Also, i look at doing tree biology on some home owner topics of understandings of the secret lives of trees from the inside out; not ripping collars, codoms, hormone flows etc. in the main MTL site (not knot site).

i hope i have enough time to do my best; and seek not to be the end 'expert'; jsut one lending their understandings in the time of my own passing thru for the next person/generation to take further/ add their layer to the whole. The MTL is in someways bloated(like this post

); i still maintain; that it is in it's infancy; much work to be done!

Thanx to all including Tom for keeping all this together until it's time to grow and mature into the sites that are now available for all, excellance of Mark and Mahk to reach for, ol'Joe, Cary, Glens, MM keeping me on my toes and thinking/explaining thoughts, the expansion of the visual for(u)m by MB; all the help and expansion lent by the Knude one (whom i plan on exploiting much, much further), as well as too many i have left out! And all ways to Doc Shigo; a real follower of his dreams and understanding against all naysayers; for the beneift of all Nature and mankind alike(usually 2 different categories for some reason!).

Okay, i'm done (fer now!)
