Tapered whoopie?

From what I understand, a whoopie sling in choke has about the same strength as the rope it was made from, because there is a point between the deadeye splice and the tail bury where there is only one layer of rope.

If that is right, then the adjustable loop is twice the strength of the above mentioned weakest point, since it is double. So what do you think, is it viable to splice in a lighter tail, in order to get a lighter sling? Will the 3/4 Tenex-Tec grip the 5/8 tail the same as it would grip itself? Any other caveats you can think of, please let me know.

Hi Sigurd, interesting concept. Maybe if the bury were longer the 3/4 would hold the 5/8. I don't know why, but the Tenex Tec seems to grab the best of any of the hollow braids I've tried.

One option would be to switch the places of the deadeye bury and the whoopie bury, as shown on the bottom drawing. That way the 5/8 buries into itself.

Hi Brocky, if the 5/8 is buried in itself, then as far as I can see there will become a point between the 3/4 to 5/8 splice and the tail bury where the 5/8 is one layer only, so the strength of the sling would be reduced to that value?

You're right, I didn't see that. Using your design, I wonder if two of the deadeye bury strands could extend through the whoopie bury to take up the needed 1/8" of diameter. The end of those two strands could then become part of the tail splice of the two ropes to lock them down.

It would seem to be best to just leave the two strands buried and lock brummel the two rope ends together by inserting through each other and burying the tails.
