Without spider legs you won't have limbs like this...View attachment 41636
Come off like this...View attachment 41637
And why would keep your spider legs in the toolbox? @Tyler Durden showed me how awesome hanging a bag on the hook was. Keep your extra slings in the bag and they are out of your way but always with you!
and that sling bag is a true delight for the op getting the hook and the bag back down to the climber through the canopy. the pick you used as an example is no big deal. try to do things as simply as possible. spider legs are cumbersome and time consuming for both the climber and the ground team that just has more stuff to deal with before they chip. almost every new climber i work with has all the gimmicks, and as they get experience they realize they need less and less of them to do their job. just my two cents.

you can untie all 3 of mine with a cow hitch quicker than you can unscrew and rescrew a shackle. Even with a marl or 2. Just a difference of opinion but when you throw out such a strong statement like they are useless then........ I do crane work every day. I use 3 spider legs and can get them set pretty quick!

i only make those strong statements from doing tree crane work with climbers for almost thirty years, long before it is commonplace as it is today. not trying to insult anybody, but the simplest method is always the best.

Words like always and never are best left unused. There is never always! We will agree to disagree. I've learned spider legs from guys who have as much time in the trees as you and they would likely disagree as well. We will agree to disagree. I would also suggest some of the most experienced and respected climbers on this site use spiders when necessary! The premise of the "new school fancy stuff" is sort of a dead horse IMHO. Adaptation and advancement in the industry is made via new school and progressive thinking. 20/30 years ago spider legs may not have been around or as common. Probably mainly due to the advancement in fiber technology and rope construction. "Old school" would have been several chokers of various lengths. Still effective as a balancer but "cumbersome and time consuming". Advancement on technology has brought us to spider slings with reasonable diameter lines and easy to tie. If your goal is close to balance then a choker is great. If your goal is balanced and no movement then spider legs are the tool of choice. The crane ops I work with when we rent out are surprised and pleased how large broad pics come off with little to no shift of weight. Granted I work with a little crane daily and don't have the boom height to spider leg. Most of the times the pics come off fine but often I'm not pleased with how they load the crane. My crane op has 30 years operating the crane and he and I work together deciding the balance point. Sometimes it works and sometimes its ugly but he is happy with ugly. It's me who isn't. As I said, we will agree to disagree but I certainly don't share your opinion of spider legs and would encourage everyone to take the Crane Climber Safety School in Philly this spring. It's an eye opener.

Here is the spider legs we use

I originally got them from wesspur, but can't find them on their page...it appears Treestuff carries them now. They are tagged with load weights like slings. I can't find a picture of it online, and I'm not home to get a picture of mine.

Sorry for the late reply Steve you pretty much summed it all up right there. That's exactly how we operate as awell, the balancer slings when placed in the right location make the pick come off so nice and no flipping or flopping around, even with the round slings the picks don't come off as nice as the balancers. Only time the round slings come out are for straight up and down pines, or trunk wood in my operation. My crane ops been running cranes since he was knee high to a grass hopper, and since we switched over a few years back We've set the bar higher as far as other companies he helps out rigging wise, between the Sena's and the balancer slings we are far more efficient in our picks and work. Another thing you mentioned with tying them, yep if your a proficient climber you can have them all tied just as quick as setting the round slings. No offence dbl612, until you've used them daily you'd know what Steve and I are talking about. But if the round slings are working for you then that's good. Second that on the crane climber safety course! Pete and the fellas put on an amazing 3 days!

Those Chisholm slings are nice. That's what i have but if price wasn't an issue I'd have gotten the Sampson ones WesSpur sells. Much nicer product imho but twice the price. There was talk of shrink wrapping shot and sewing it in the tail of them. Makes moving them around much more efficient.

I would go to Wesspur, TreeStuff does not have a warehouse anymore and everything is dropped shipped. So, you'll have to wait almost 2-3 weeks now for all their products. If you notice almost everything is out of stock.

That's simply untrue. Totally false.

Yup, Look around their web-site. Almost everything ships within 2-3 weeks. Meaning they take your order and pass it along to the company. They are just the muddle man now!!

False. Not true. I just finished counting over 10,000 SKUs of physical inventory over last weekend.

Where do you get your facts Royce?

Is that what is going on with those guys? I thought the buy out was going to create this amazing double inventory to pull items from...

That is not what's happened Tyler. We have had repeat record setting months of sales and are doing our best to keep up!

I understand the sales spike, I am running crews on one of the big beatle kill projects in Cali. I just don't want to have to start heading for the big guys for the treestuff I need. You guys have always been spot on with everything, untill my last order, which was my first order after the merger. Most of the PPE in my size was out of stock, and I never received a rope bag I ordered. I would like to continue being a loyal customer, but if I need PPE I need it now.

Was it Pfanner stuff? They are having tons of issues keeping up with demand and there isn't much we can do about it.

Did you talk with Joe about the rope bag?

Fellers before you take to the internet to bash TS has anyone of you picked up the phone and called them? Have you sent Nick a text as he has requested a million times on here? I am in no means defending them just trying to establish your situation before taking any side. I personally have ordered a bunch here at the end of the year and no hiccup in the least. If there was to be one a quick text to @bonner1040 has it resolved. Just my two cents, if I was to have taken to this no call bashing situation you would read a thread called Carlton sucks but instead a quick phone call and I couldn't be more pleased.

I put in a Pfanner order during the "powerball" sale at the end of November. The Gladiator pants I wanted were not in stock, which I understand. What I don't get is why I could not have them back ordered and have them sent at the sale price when they did come in.
Did get a nice Cordura Forest jacket though.(y)

Back to the thread.....
Have to agree and that you can't go wrong with either the Treufelberger slings or the Quantum-X slings.

X3 on the crane climber safety course.

..

Due to general displeasure with backorder times we stopped allowing certain vendors to be ordered when not in stock. If you call in you can still put them on order but will be warned of potentially soul crushing wait times. Im happy to honor that discount for you if you want to call and talk to Josh or one of the others, just tell them to check with me if they are unsure.

Guys , don't get me worng, I'm not here bashing treestuff. I just thought it should be mentioned in public that I have seen bit of a decline in service sence the buy out. I have not had time to send a formal email about the rope bag, I am moving from Texas to California. If you guys had not kicked so much ass in the first place, these things would seem very minor. The PPE was all saw protective stuff I needed for the project I am working on now, I guess I am a very common size and other guys got to the stuff first. Unfortunately I had to order some of it from the other guys. I will stay a loyal customer, treestuff has always treated me right.

Thanks Nick, I'll do that as I see they are in stock now.:bananahappy:
