T.B. like Facebook?

I think T.B. needs to change a little. I think the
Facebook model or Youtube model could work well for a couple of reasons.

Here's how:

I would like to see redundant posts eliminated or greatly reduced here at T.B. One way to prevent this is the "Like" option. So, if someone on T.B. likes someone's comment, then it should be known. If there needs to be a "comment" made, then that isn't a problem.

I think this sort of format could also reduce quarrels. Because we can see all sorts of people read thread topics, but few contribute. I feel it's because some don't want to get involved, some don't have confidence to post, some think it's a waste of time, etc... I think the F.B. format may get the "fringe" watchers to get a little more involved by simply "Liking" a thread or "Liking" a person's P.O.V. on his/her post.

I've been under the scope a couple of times and it is nice to get support from people in P.M.'s. It would also be nice to see a boat load of "Likes" on a post when being bombarded with insults.

Heck, I also like the system Youtube has on comments. Some comments can get voted up or down. That could reduce total posts and reduce the time involved with debates.

Give me a thumbs up, if you understand what I'm saying.

One thing I've learned about change... Expect opposition. I'm all ears when someone is willing to stick their neck out to make something better or more efficient. I'm not sure what the sacrifice would be to Tom and Mark but I gotta believe they'll be watching this thread closely. Hat's off to you Jamin.

I'm on my blackberry so the wink will have ta do.

I think Jamin has a very good point. I think it would be good for all the reasons he states. I often don't know if one of my contributions is seen as stupid, ignorable or of merit. And like Jamin, encouragement has been sometimes thru other channels. I don't mind if someone disagrees with me either. It's how I learn.

However it might be difficult or impoosible to incorporate that here depending on whether this is custom programmed or using an existing template.

AS has it. I'm seldom on there but the 'like' feature doesn't seem overused.

Does this forum even have that option?

One drawback, is that if someone is offended by a good post, that someone could PM or email friends to thumbs-down. Like a small neg reputation campaign on the side.

I've seen similar done on KATU news here locally in the comments, and it's surprising how often a wise comment is thumbed down. Often because people thumb-it-down when they read the first sentence and miss the punchline or latter sentences that put the reply in context.

Pass for me. I dislike facebook in too many way to express. I'd stick to a forum format and have good old fashion discussions that lead to derails and rants. Facebook it too social and not enough about what matters.

Pass on that for me as well, same reasons Jman put forward.

Useless to me that anyone 'likes' or 'dislikes', I would like to know why.

Trees please also has it right, thumbs up or down has not solved disputes between micro-brains on youtube.

And Frax, aka Nora, don't you dare stop posting up TreeBuzz social topics! It's been marvelous to have WOTT, all of you, posting on the 'regular' forums. If I would ever just give one thing a

, that would be it.

It's the richness of perspectives that make this place interesting, (not to mention the great knowledge and expertise of many participants) and I don't think gold stars or rep or friends or likers/dislikers would help that.

Too high school.

Northwind

p.s. Frax, I know you post much more than social topics, and I enjoy all that as well. Just don't stop.

Treebuzz does need updated, but not like Facebook, like Arbtalk which runs on the Vbulletin setup, sorry to say this Tom, but the interface between user and forum is far superior to the current Treebuzz setup.

You can embed multiple pics in seconds and youtube vids will also embed, as an example of this - check out America's Greatest Arborist and his most recent video on a current Arbtalk vid thread -

C'mon Treebuzz! we need to move with the times! a little, maybe?

The software that TB runs on is a bit old, agreed. Mark and I have talked about upgrading. There are limitations as you've mentioned.

Personally, I don't care for FB and all of the social sites. Too much time monitoring already. This doesn't mean that changes won't happen though.

i vote for the V-bulliten layout.

tom, do you guys need help with tech work?? my mother is a internet tech. she has worked on projects for major corporations and is really good at what she does. PM me if your interested. her rates are not too expensive either.

Treebuzz works great for me. It's the most "no frills" site I've been too. Just here for the info. It's important for me, the weekend warrior, to stay fresh when I can't find time to climb. Check in read a few threads check out. I'm sure FB has it's merits but darn if I've found any.
