Does anyone have any experience with this system?


Pros and con would be much appreciated!



I was thinking this could be a good set up rather than putting an arbortech body on the cab and chassis.



I was thinking it could be helpful for those jobs where you have a few logs you want to throw into the can in stead of bringing a skid steer to the job site to load one stick into the truck.
 
Goodaking, are you thinking that you would drop it ion the ground and roll the heavy stuff into it? I'm curious how you are envisioning using it.
 
Oroboros, yes i was thinking on smaller jobs or jobs we cant use the skid loader, we could use something like the arbor trolley to get it to the can and roll everything in. On my next truck i don't want to have to lift logs over chest height any more. done with that. I Also thought about a lift gate on a utility arbortech chip box?

I struggled with the though of doing that, getting an old truck with lift gate, then install a dump body on it as well, but i went the route of a traditional dump just cause the weight of a lift means fewer chips in the bed... when looking at dump bodies I looked at landscape/grain bodies which has both the dump gate at the back, but also a 3' or 4' wide door at the passenger side of the truck, I thought the addition of a cheap movers ramp would make it easy to load wood curbside with a dolly rather than needing to lift it. Or also a pulley mounted over the door so wood could just be pulled in with a small 3:1 or 4:1 MA system, (Like how jesse huffman loads woods on his truck in his videos).

like i said, i ended up just getting a mason dump body f550 and loving it, but it was a thought for a while.

I would go with a hook lift system. Depending on the type of truck that you put it on, it might not be enough. Sometimes we pick up containers in excess of 20000 pounds.
 
We've got the switch n go bodies on a few trucks.

Have to consider the body goes beyond 45* when loading/unloading, so good luck getting a chunk of wood in the back after you've chipped into it. Unless of course you want to get in and shovel everything back from the door!

They have their pluses and minuses!
 
Jeff do u mind going into detail a bit more? We are trying to decide on a hook lift, grapple/chip truck combo, or just a new chip truck and any input is appreciated.
 
When dropping a can, the hoist tips it up (like what would happen if dumping a load) it then either lets out cable/hook arm extends out (depending on what type of switch and go mechanism you have) in the process of the raising of the body to allow it to slide off the truck, all material will fall back as well. Chunk wood or logs wouldnt be as bad as chips like Jeff said. It would basically dump the load over the top of the back (depending on the height of the rear door) and once the can is dropped then all the material is at the back, so if you wanna open the door then all the chips/material would need to be moved back forward or else itd spill out when the door opened.

Make more sense?

The trick that i think would be neat to see is just make a door on the front of a rolloff can, that way chips go to the back, and you can load wood in the front, some sort of cargo net stays in the can as a divider so chips can be blown in, but keeps wood from falling out when dumping chips if you cant leave mixed piles of wood and chips, then just slack the net, and wood can be dumped.

If you are using a switch and go a 13500# gvw isn't enough. You would need to go to a 15k or more. Even with their smallest body. When I load mine 3/4 full of chips I am 2000# overweight. Don't let the installer put rubber mud flaps on the fenders. The dealer did that on mine and when backing up with 1/2 a load it caught under the tire and broke the fender. Look at where it will sit on the truck too. The chassis I had has a fuel tank right near the back so we were unable to move the unit close to the cab.

I have had other minor issues but my biggest complaint is STS Trailer Sales in Albany NY. The did a poor job with the installation, lied to me when doing follow up and are very unprofessional. It took months to get a follow up call from them. And they would not stand behind there work.

As for the concept. It works great. We use several different bodies regularly.
