suggestions on saving this maple??

I am going to mulch around this tree to the drip line with organic mulch. Flat no more 3-4" thick. 6-8" away from the trees root collar. There is plastic material over the root zone near the tree collar. Im going to remove it. Im going to lower the soil at the base of the root collar, it was built up with soil for the plants planted around the base next to the root collar. Any suggestions on the water that is trapped in the crotch of the tree? There are a few areas in the tree like that. The brown spots on the leaves, im still not sure what that is about....??? I have seen this on pretty much all the maples this year. Heard that it is a blight that is plaguing the maples this year. I am hoping that if i can improve the soil that maybe i can bring the tree back. Im also going to use nurse logs on the mulched area of the root zone. Im also going to do a very light pruning. any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Forks are cracking; consider cabling. Leaf spot Taphrina sp. cosmetic only. Pruning might focus on structure to relieve strain on bad forks.

They're really gonna sacrifice all that lawn? Wow. Where will the hostas go? O and the bleeding lesion could be treated. Good luck and please post pics of the root collar, if and when you find it!

Thanks Guy. Not sure whats up for the hostas?? Guess i will find out. Well as far as the lawn goes they are allowing me to mulch close or to the drip line. There is a lot of foliar clumpage on the ends of the branches. I was going to prune for structure and weight reduction, as conservative as possible right now. Do you feel that is a good approach to start with Guy?

Hey Guy im not sure if it is taphina....???? Please correct me if im wrong but doesnt taphrina curl the leaves???

twig I'd aggressively subordinate nearby branches to assert dominant leader(s). google gilman on this
Scrape the black stuff off before drying.
please google taphrina.
hostas might look nice at the dripline, and direct water where it does good.
Do you see any black or white dots on the branches?
