Stump Removal

I have a couple of stumps to remove, and I don't own a stump grinder. One possibility is to rent one and the other is to rent a cement saw (much cheaper). I say CEMENT saw because the saw will not be affected if it hits dirt or stone.

With the saw, I would hope to expose/cut the roots near the base and pull the stump over/out with our truck.

I'm not sure which would be quicker, but I am concerned about flying debris with the stump grinder.

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Renting one comes to mind. My machine is small, yet agile. Large diameter stumps could be discouraging with it however, I tried a technique where I grind the perimeter of the stump, eventually excavating the root flare to about 16 inches. Then I takes my chainsaw and cut the very last piece of firewood off the stump. Did it a few times and was able to extract 3-4 foot dia stumps in less than an hour.

I rented one for my own use (RSC rental) the cost was 140$ for a day( I picked it up Friday return Monday) then I did some stumps in town and made 200$ plus the 140$ I needed for rental.

Where did you buy it?

The manufacturer hasn't got the machining stenciled out for an MS880. I asked cause I was hoping to stay White and Orange. Oh well. The 3120 has 8.5 hp, you can get a Stihl cutoff saw for it, I think it's the 760? for the unit, but it has less power.

Renting stump grinders for the day is expensive.
The best i would recommend for you is simply get some estimates and take it from there. Flying debris will be the contractors baby ! Tackling a stump without the correct equipment is like taking on a tree removal when you've never climbed before.
