Stump grinding teeth- please advise

Hi there... I recently rented a Vermeer SC30TX stump grinder and had a lot of trouble using it. Ran the machine for 11 hours and barely got through 4 stumps. I then inspected the teeth and saw they were completely worn, as picture shows. Upon returning the equipment I was met with hostility and told the machine was in proper rental condition before I used it. My question is this... how long would it take to wear down a grinder tooth this far? And could that damage be done in 11 hours of use. Strictly stumps, rocks and such were cleared. Personally, I don't think the teeth have ever been turned or replaced (tachometer reads 247 hours). Is there any possible way I wore the tooth down to half the nut and bolt missing? I'm out the $500 rental fee and job isn't done

You could ruin a full set of teeth in 5 Minutes when continiously trying to grind a rock or steel. Hard to tell, you could have ruined it, or they where blown in the beginning. Maybe you screwed them on the first stump, that's why it took so long. Before pics would have been better or investigate on pickup...

If we rent a grinder, we always check the teeth before we start. That being said, to do that kind of damage to set of teeth only takes a few seconds if you get against a good hard rock. It’s hard to remove every rock from a set of stumps, sometimes there is even a rock inside of a stump. It’s something you have to listen for, rocks sound differently than stumps when you grind them.

Personally I think the teeth were trashed before you got it, or you don't know what grinding rock sounds like. IMO to do that much damage in short order you would have to be grinding a rock instead of a stump. I have hit many many rocks and never killed pockets and teeth that bad.

It’s very possible and with some rental businesses it’s probable but if you didn’t check the condition first, we can’t know.

Those look like greenteeth with very little carbide left as if they had been ground down quite a bit for sharpening. The bolt threads are even exposed and worn down that's pretty dangerous.

They actually appear to be Vermeer’s preferred Yellow Jacket teeth, which are somewhat ellipsoidal, rather than round.

I have seen teeth and pockets that bad; made one or two myself actually with not more than a couple hits on the right kind of rock, but I am running much higher horsepower grinders, so I don’t know how long it would take with a little one like that.
