I grew up doing that and watching my parents do that actually...that chipshoot is not really a great alternative.

This is my setup for air spading. Roll-around clothing racks (got the idea from my wife's closet overflow) with custom sized vinyl banners from the local print shop. Lightweight, quick to set up, easy to move around the job site from tree to tree. If I'm working on a slope, I have steel piping that I hammer into the ground and then insert the rack uprights into. Contains 95%+ of the soil during RCEs, looks professional AF, and is free advertising to the neighbors. Granted, this was more expensive than simply using the ground mats you guys probably all carry anyway...
