And, in that same publication from Petzl, they also tested them extensively (including cutting the links on purpose) and determined that the cracked links won't cause a fall. In fact, not a single fall has been reported to date. I'm guessing that spreading out the replacements over time is more cost effective than a recall, but who knows? As near as I can figure out, the link plates would almost all have to fail on both sides... or most of them, anyway, or it just jams up on the rope. That could leave you stranded there for awhile, maybe.
However, I agree that it would be in Petzl's best interest to just recall all of the Version 1 & 2 units and be done with it. Whether or not there is a fall risk, this can't be doing their image any good to drag this out for so long. The version three changes seem to have fixed the issue, so maybe it's time to kick up production and just replace all the other ones. Personally, I'm getting tired of waiting for mine to crack so I can send them in.
