Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions?

Hey, y'all.

There's a lot of powders etc. about that boast about having stuff in them that makes you grow muscles, burn fat, and have more energy to burn when you're training.

Has anyone ever used these products at work? As a climbing arborist, I've been wondering for a while if these could help make me fitter at work.

I don't bother training outside work, as it takes it out of me most days anyway, so can anyone suggest a product that they've used and had success with?

sorry if any of the above is incoherent; i just got in and have the after work drunky feeling.

Hi there!
Well I've tried a few suppliments and they all seem to work providing your putting the time in,in the gym.A good rule of thumb for muscle building is to eat one gram of protein per pound of body weight.Try to spread this out over six meals if you can. Also include a good ammino acid and a creatine powder in your diet. The best deals on suppliments are usually from a mail order firm, try the internet mate. Also keep your water intake high to help your body metabolise the protein.I have a program a mate of mine put together to help me when I was doing big removal work in the States.I'll be happy to Email it to you if your interested.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

Treebogan, why not post it here?

Rentachimp , What are your goals, what are you trying to accomplish?

I don't believe there is any miracle in a bottle, for strength or size you need to hit the gym.

The one thing almost everyone agrees with taking is a high quality fish oil. ZMA is also gaining alot of popularity and i just recently started taking it.

When weight training protein intake is important as treebogan mentioned and the 1gm per pound of body weight is a good rule to follow. But If you are not hitting the iron you probably don't need that much. You do not get stronger lifting weights, you get stronger by recovering from lifting weights. The extra protein is to aid with recovery.

I recently changed everything about the way I weight train. I now only do compound movements, squats, dead lifts power cleans, bench ,standing barbell press etc. No isolation movements, I also do alot of kettlebell exercises. I just recently started taking some classes on Olympic lifting.

I see people in the gym doing a bunch of tricep and bicep isolation work trying to get big arms, but to gain an inch on your arms you need to gain 20lbs of body weight. Do you really want to carry that extra 20 lbs? When I was in high school I had 20in arms, but I also gained 100lbs in 4 years. Now I just regret it.

The book to buy for strength training is Starting strength by Ripetoe. If you are looking for overall fitness then check out crossfit.com
The crossfit work outs are killer. Go on youtube and search under crossfit to see what the workouts are all about.

It is tough getting to the gym when you are climbing 5 days a week, But with a smart schedule all you need is 3 days a week and you will see results.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

I really do not want to go to the gym.

Don't really want to gain weight, since I gotta haul my buns up trees all day; just wondering if there's anything I can take that'll aid my body to use the effort I put in daily to strengthen and tone myself so I'm better at bloody climbing.

I wouldn't be averse to doing some sit-ups, squats and training like that, but I'm too busy to justify regular gym attendance.

I'm not about to make body crafting my life; it's just something I have to cram in alongside more pursuits :)

just looking to be a wiry powerhouse, really haha

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

I just got a book called Bodyweight Exercises For Extraordinary Strengh. Its all vartations of push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-up. There all exercises you can do in your basement.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

I wouldn't recommend the creatine. This will get you stronger but puts a lot of mass on the body. Protein is a good source as far as building muscle and fueling the rebuilding of muscles. I take a whey protein on a regular basis. Usually two shakes a day and eat a lot of chicken and fish. I've put on some mass but I've trimmed fat and gotten more lean. The powder shakes I take are from Pro source. They're the same thing as the GNC stuff but cheaper.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

I have been thinking along the same lines lately. I purchased Creatine (tablet form) and Protein powder (for shakes). I have noticed faster recovery after long days. I don't necessarily want to bulk up, rather I want to be in great shape for my occupation. I kind of think of myself as a "tool." If my body isn't working, then I don't make a living.

I definitely don't want to be like this.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

haha great Vid.

Exactly; I want to be able to perform my job better, with very little Post/Pre work training. Just get on the protein, then, I suppose?

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

Treebogan

Here are my thoughts on your workout. It is just my thoughts, there is no right or wrong. If it is working for you , then that is all that counts. Just looking for a discussion, because this stuff interests me of late.

The 10x4 is an advanced training protocol that most will never need to work up to. But, I have no idea of your training history.

I no longer believe in isolation movements, your tricep work will come from standing barbell press, bench press and dips. Bicep work will come from chin ups and barbell rows. In tree work or the real world when do you ever isolate one muscle and ask it to perform?

You are trying to break down muscle groups in an ineffective way. You say straight leg dead lifts for back, but they also work your ham strings. Etc most of your work out is the same way.

I also do not believe in using machines or a smith machine for strength training. In tree work when are you ever locked into one position and asked to perform? Barbell work makes you use all the small stabilizer muscles. Why do seated shoulder presses when standing military presses make you recruit so many more muscles.

It is more of a condensed bodybuilding routine with an advanced strength set/rep protocol.

How long have you been doing this routine? Do you keep a log book? How often are you able to go up in weight for your exercises? How long does your average work out last?

I know for myself after a day of climbing there is no way I could keep up the intensity for 10 sets of each exercise. I basically go 5x5 for my work sets. Some days when I'm fried I'll go heavier and just do 3x3.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

Fair enough
I'm no longer doing this routine, and yeah I always keep a log book dozens of one's filled up after nine years of weight training. The idea this this program was to lower the sets and reps when you increased the weight.
About every couple of weeks after a few weeks into the program,so I'd be doing 8x3 and when I felt like I had achive the bulk I needed, threw the program to 3x12,man that was tough as my body was so used to low reps.
The high neber of sets was bloody tough, but as with all programs I just had to "get it done" and my training partner was also my workmate,so there were never any real excuses's
When are there?
This program was the fastest for bulking up that I have ever used, that was what I needed at the time.'
Also weighted dips work the chest as well as the back of your shoulders two eh?
Pulling a big saw up your climing rop if your standing in spurs and the rope is beween your legs?
Taking down big ol trees isn't so much of an agility game that pruning those same sized trees is.I recognise that there must be better programs around for all round climing.

Re: Strength-Building Supplements. Any suggestions

I just started mountain biking again, been trying to go every other day after work and I can quickly feel the difference. More overall energy and feel lighter and leaner as well. Will try and keep it up, beats going to a gym and paying as well.
