We need radios of some sort. Durability and dependability are the most important. PTT can work, VOX would be nice. Budget has to be considered too.

My Stein PTT's are still working fine, but they don't see everyday use as I've only been using them for crane work and I don't have a crane that goes out everyday.

I'm finding the Stein uncomfortable for all day use. It's heavier than a normal protector, even the larger peltor (105?). It can be snapped out from the ear but you can't easily rotate it to sit up against the helmet due to the cord. If you're going to go with a headset then spend the money and get the most comfortable, lightest, wireless VOX style. That way you'll gladly use it and not be distracted by it.
I have a pair of Sena SMH10s and absolutely love them. Bluetooth with a good range for every day tree work and so far flawless operation. Cheap too IMO, I got 2 sets for $250 off ebay. We mounted them in our Kask muffs and they work great, need to relocate the unit as on the side like I have it the button keeps getting pushed by brush but they are well worth the trouble to dial in a system. It was funny when a couple of weeks ago one of the units wasnt plugged in the charger for a few days and went dead, man it really sucked having to shout again.....

We have been shopping for some radio headsets and are trying to suss out what's the best overall package.
Shouting is for the birds. I was using cheap Motorola walkie-talkies today in some tall trees, and even then it was hard to communicate. A big improvement, but still hard from high up and with the chipper running.

Sean, not sure how to post pics here. The only worry I would have for you is the Senas are good for when you have line of sight. Mine will work with a house between you but Im wondering if you are up a 250' fir with a bunch of brush whether they will be reliable.... Dont know. Maybe DMC can chime in as he has a pair also.....
The Sena units are not only affordable but have great clarity and range. They offer several different units but, as of yet, do not have one specifically for our industry. We are using the SPH 10 with foam ear plugs underneath and still have enough volume for clear communications.
Range is not quite the 980 yards advertised. We get around 600 yards depending on terrain, more than enough. I have not figured out the magic yet. Sometimes we can talk through thick tree canopies and through houses and sometimes not. Even at the edge of range you will not get any cross traffic interference.
Ok, now the down sides.
They really need to make something specific for our industry. Our SPH 10s are adequate but not very comfortable, depending on safety glasses and safety helmet setup, or rugged. The boom mike, which is directional and outstanding for high noise communications cannot take the day-to-day abuse. So we are using the shorty mikes which are rugged but not as good in high noise situations.
I would seriously give a look at helmet mounting their new SMH 10R.

Because my last post ended on what the Sena units are not good at I wanted to clarify my thoughts by quoting my first and last sentences. Electronically the Sena's are very, very, good. Once you have used a full duplex system, let alone one that has Blue-tooth, you will understand how superior it is for tree work compared to push-to-talk.
I would much prefer that they offer a tree specific unit but even so, I will happily make do and enjoy top quality communications at a far lower price then other currently available, duplex com sets.

Dave I have the SMH 10s and have just recently removed the boom mike from the unit and mounted it to my Kask and relocated the unit to the back of the helmet out of the way. They work awesome and I for one would have a hard time being without them. Another thing to add to the list that I am indebted to you for, turning me onto these......
