Stein PTT Radio Headsets

I do like my Kenwood radios, but I think one thing is in agreement: Radio comms on the job add much to safety. Being able to communicate your intentions and your needs effectively between people aloft and on the ground makes the job go faster, easier, and much safer. I'm long since done with yelling down to try to get my message across.

X2!

I have the crane signal chart permanently attach to one of my toolboxes.

But they wouldn't be applicable to a Kboom!

How would you either signal or say retract boom to a Kboom CO?

How could the Kboom op even do so without articulating?

Is this something the Z committee will need to address soon?

Am I just an old school whiner not up on the latest crane lingo?

I'm weighing in on the stein radios. So we have used them for two weeks of bucket work and three days of crane work. Im not to crazy about them. The plug into the headset pulls out a lot which is frustrating. The clips on the mindland radios have broken. The other thing is that push to talk for crane work takes a hand away that is needed for other things. You could duck tape the plug in place I guess.

I think for light duty applications they would work but for regular commercial work I'm going to look to the eartec. Just my two cents.

Frashdog,

you're radios work so well on that mountain because your employer has invested serious money in repeaters. Not to take away from them, but its the truth.

As for headsets, I am currently a HUGE fan of Eatrtec, they just released a new system, and I have heard rumors they have a surprise for us at TCI Expo that will be a game changer in terms of radio and full wireless communications built into earmuffs.......I hope they nail this, if this rumor is true!

When is the show?

I want a set, but hate buying something to find out something else is in the works. Then just have to rebuy it again.

If this were true you would live in a cave and never use any money.

There will always be something bigger, better, faster coming down the pipes.

Show is in November?

BB,
I assume you meant "Eartec." Right?

What Eartec model radios are you using? Can you give pros and cons, and maybe a link to exactly what you have, please?

Do you need additional stuff to make yours work, like the radios that connect to the Stein PTTs?

Thanks.

Cons are that you have a wire that you need to run down your shirt, and the headsets are not integrated into your ear muffs. They will integrate them into your muffs no problem, if you provide the muffs. The only other small annoyance is a little antenna on the pack that sits on your belt, but they are somewhere in the $5 range to replace.

The link below takes you to a newer set they came out with a few months back, no more antenna, better range, etc.

This fall I have heard rumors of a new design???

I dot think you can make these work with those Steins? Are the Steins really PTT only and no voice activation?

I think the new eartecs have no wire from the headset to the belt pack. I believe I discussed this in another thread, or maybe this one.

IMO, they're still too expensive for a small company, whereas the Stein's are very affordable.

Are the Stein PTT only or do they have voice activation like Earmark and Eartec?

Havent had a chance to play with a set yet

I think you're right.

But there is still that belt pack that needs to be eliminated. :)

PTT only.

Saying they are a safety hazard is going a little far. Inconvenient- yes. They are designed to be cheap and simple which is what they are. They are flawed just like all the radio headsets ive worked with.

The STEINPTT was designed and created as a cost effective communication device for the everyday arborist. For many years companies have wanted this kind of device but the options available to them were far too expensive.

STEIN listened and created a system which was readily available and affordable to these companies. Yes granted it is not the top-of-the-range system with all the whistles and bells like other systems but it was never designed to be.

These companies now have a system available to them which in-time will increase their productivity, look more professional, and ultimately work safer.

We opted against the VOX control as the PTT system makes you think about what you are doing before you communicate; it also reduces you being distracted if your work colleagues are hogging the channel discussing the antics of the night before. To communicate yes you hold the button in and release after you have spoken keeping the channel clear (is this a safety hazard?)

Seems like a safety hazard?

No wonder they are so cheap.

Totally false.

Nigel, thanks for your input and for providing a good, affordable Radio Headset for small companies such as myself.

Not everbody can afford the price that the big boys pay for their gear, so you are helping us out with these PTT radios. I'm sure if others try them, they'll really like them.

Dan, I wouldn't call them cheap, but would call them economical.
