Stein Arborist Helmet

It’s always pleasure to give due credit to a good product and this one is no exception. While I’ve been disappointed by similarly modernized climbing helmets in the past, and have twice now had to revert back to my traditional style peak-less husky….finally, I’ve found an Arborist helmet that’s ‘right on the money’.

Compact, ventilated, well balanced and secure, the Stein Arborist helmet comes with a clear and/or mesh visor which are easily swapped in a minute or so. The clear visor is also available smoked, although I personally didn’t bother as sunlight is hardly an issue in England at the moment. The visor is close fitting to your eyes and bridge of the nose, yet maintains adequate ventilation to prevent it from steaming up. The helmet is available in a range of colours. I’d personally hoped for sky blue after Manchester City football club but this was as close as they could offer.

I hate spending spend money on climbing-type gear….slings, blocks and other rigging essentials yes, but I have little enthusiasm for climbing stuff. However, my husky was well past its use-by date and the salesmen assured me that this particular helmet was a winner and that I would not experience the same dissatisfaction that I'd had with previous helmets.

In summarizing, if a working Arborist didn’t have a hand in the design of this helmet then whoever’s behind it got dam lucky.

Incidentally, a representative from the distributors will be dropping in at your show in Milwaukee. Apparently his route to the show is quite an epic from here, so if you do see a rather tired looking gentleman carrying a bunch of helmets then kindly buy him a coffee someone….his names Nigel.

Have great show by the way, those of you that are going. Thanks

Thanks Reg!

I'm not really happy with the helmets that I've tried here.

I'm looking forward to trying that one out. Tell Nigel I will be looking for him.

Holly, that looks interesting as well.

The Stein Helmets are currently available in both EN12492 (Mountaineering) and EN397 (Work) standards. All are fully vented at present so not Class E. You will see from the pictures that the inner part of the helmet is padded, and not a supension type system.

At present these helmets are not availble for sale in the USA yet, hence my visit to TCIA.

don't they need to be a supension type system to be able to use it here in USA?

We can still use a non-suspension type helmet, if we choose to. It would be at our own risk (both physically and with ANSI regs). Would this cross over to an OSHA violation if one were using this new helmet?

I got hit by a sizeable limb the other day on the head. It happened during a rigging situation. I was instructing a climber to get out of the way of the limbs path while he was aloft. The limb swag into another and launched a piece at me. I had my head down and it managed to cut my nose. I'm okay, thanks to the Petzl helmet.

--->If I had a helmet, with just foam inside, would an incident like that jar my head to injure my neck?

Just what are they lined with? When I played football all we had were suspension type helmets and they were especially good for listening to the birds sing when you got your bell rung. They don't use them anymore thank God. Cycling helmets are not a suspension type and they have saved me many times.
The fact that these helmets are not a suspension type is the reason they really interest me.

So.. it's up to us to decide whether we need a type I or type II style helmet depending on the possibility of a side impact? I'm assuming that a suspension type helmet would be a type I and a poly lined helmet would be a class II?

The ANSI Z133.1 only states "...shall wear head protection that conforms to ANSI Z89.1."

Most of the newer light weight helmets are lined with polystyrene. Living in the desert I'm always concerned that I'd be cooking my brain if I wore one of these.

Here's a comparison chart for the ANSI helmet standards.
