Steep Slope

Location
Chicago
We did a "Vista Prunning" last week behind 9 homes that backed up to lake Michigan. The clients wanted a better view of the lake. The slope was soo steep you could not walk on it you needed to be on rope.We were required to just prune the trees and keep as much growth on the slope as possiable to keep the slope stable. The gaps were around 50' across. We set up a "high line" between trees on the edges. We used a large DMM rigging hub to keep things organised and simple. It was very nice not to have to use any links.

We would rap down on a grigri and ascend using a hand held cam backed up with a grigri or a prusik above the cam. The set up was two peices of snake bit using both ends acting as twin ropes tied to the hub. We then tensioned the twins with a 5 to 1 anchored to a large portawrap. Then backed up with two seperate prusiks to a seperate anchor organized with a hitch climber.

The nice part about the system is that it was fast to set up and tear down. We never took the ropes out of the hub. We simply tossed it all into a large bag on wheels. The system was also easily repeatable. It was a fun job except for the weather. It rained just about every day.

Todd, how much of your "vista pruning" work really that, or is most of it "line of sight" clearing where the climber has to rape and top everything between sighting stakes, much like infantry fields of fire.

I always find it difficult to make "windows" or "channels" of view for people on lakes, especially Michigan bluff work. What we usually end up doing is narrowing the lines of sight that the client wants, and opening up true vista windows on the edges to make them happier.
