Steel toe boot essential?

Re: Steel toe boot essential?

I cant stand steel toes. They stick in crotches and in the winter I feel like that toe piece is a block of ice. I have been kickin around in logger type Georgia boots for a bit now and swear by them. But, these guys on here have me considering a lightweight hiker boot on my next go round. I dread the thought of spending more than 200 bucks on a pair because I have a tendency to beat up my boots with my gaffs.

Thinking about it, I have no idea. From what I understand is if you get hurt while your at work you get worker's comp. I guess if you where to cut your foot with a chainsaw while at work you might not get it because you didn't take proper precautions. I'll have to ask my boss tomorrow and get back to you.

I did find out that my company doesn't require you to wear steel toes and that my safety coordinator for our division doesn't wear them himself. Which makes me feel good.

I did buy a pair of asolos. Wore them around all of today and plan on really taken them out for a spin on tuesday when I get back to work (finally got back from pittsburgh yesterday).

I work for one of the larger companies in the U.S. They don't require us to wear them. I'll have to ask my safety coordinator to see what he says about it. I dislike Osha's way of wording and how you can interpret some of their standards and requirements. But i do see what your saying. It does say something about custom footwear so I'm not sure if that can be applied or not.

I have thought about getting pinched by the steel toe before. I have got hit with some pretty heavy stuff. I think what it would take to pinch your toes would shatter them anyways, without the steal toe.

I'm not sure about the current theory, but a few years ago, the generally accepted theory on steel toe boots in an industrial setting was that a REALLY heavy load on the steel toe would sever your toes, allowing for surgical reattachement. Without the steel toes, you would just get mush - no repair possible. Of course, it also protects from the daily bumps and tool drops ... as well as chainsaw hits.

That said, they're certainly difficult to use for tree climbing work.

Re: Steel toe boot essential?

Mythbusters show on the discovery channel did extensive testing on steel toe boots and whether the toes get severed or not and the results showed that the toes will get crushed but not cut off the foot or severed. Is that the end all beat all answer? I dont think so. I'm sure somewhere out there someone has had their toes severed. Just my spin.
