I was told that it's better to post in this forum. Thx

As most of you guys knew that I recently picked up that chipper for a good price of 5500. Want to start this thread to give update on my restoration progress and of course, asking you all experts for opinions and help also to document what I did to it for my future reference and might be helpful for someone as well. Thx

Dived into it yesterday for the first time. Replaced the mechanical fuel pump, rebuilt the carb and the engine fired right up. Ran it for 30 min to bring all the fluid to operating temp and changed out engine oil and hydraulic fluid.

Not sure if the feeding wheel is working right at this point. It only turns when I flip the autofeed switch on, which is not what I expect. It turns when the engine is running idle or full speed. As soon as that switch is on off position, it stops. I’d expect the opposite. With my old 6” Vermeer I used to have, feeding wheel is always on when the autofeed on off, and when the autofeed is on, the feeding wheel only turns when rpm reaches certain number. Looks like I need to dig into the wiring and figure out what’s going on. Does anyone know a source for the wiring diagram?

Next step:

  • Order the 2 little round mufflers. No idea yet where to get them, but will find out.
  • Clean up old grease on all bearings and grease them
  • Test chip some wood for the first time, exciting!
  • Replace tires or tire n wheel assemb. (I used to just buy the whole thing from Vermeer for 60 bucks)
  • Pack hub bearings

Check that the blades and anvil are torqued right.

A manual touch-up on the blades, and verification of correct anvil gap and anvil condition might be good.

Check your lug nuts are tight.

Tractor supply company, or online...
A pneumatic, swivel caster for the tongue, for moving by hand.

Took the old anvil off the machine, pretty rounded. instead of flip it, I might just upgraded to the newer design with two banjo bolts.

installed muffler. adjusted the governor spring position and set screw to get as close to 3600 rpm as possible. it's a very stupid design on the 23 HP Kohler. If you set the spring that holds the throttle lever down at a position that can open the throttle all the way open, then it can't travel back to idle position. If you set it to be able to travel to idle position, then it can only go to like 2000 rpm. can't wait to slap a different engine on it some day.

will order the swivel caster today/ sounds like a very good idea. Thx Southsoundtree. The go get the wheel n tires from Walmart, like 90 bucks a pair.bandit 65 anvil.webp

Now I think about it, it's not a easy thing to upgrade to the newer one. How to remove the thread in that 2 hole. it might be tough with the angle. Now I'm wondering if this is indeed a 2003 modle or earlier one. It has a serial number of 004004. anyone know?

Bandit should be able to tell you for sure, if you don’t get a positive answer here.

Did you get the manual with it? Is there a bunch of checklists in it? Should be daily, weekly, monthly, annually etc. Maybe some suggested maintenance for every 50 or 100 hours or something like that.

Vermeer has online manuals.
Maybe Bandit does, too, or get a paper manual.

Is spring fatigue a factor in the throttle situation?

@Merle Nelson 's caster idea, originally, with a twist of tongue-mount, instead of tongue-jack mounted.

Huh. I have to find where I left phone posting directions.

Erwin, what is the method of adjusting the chute 360 degrees and holding it in place when it's not chained in place?

That’s funny. That is the picture taken at the seller’s place he chained it so no one can steal it from his front yard.

Method of adjustment?
there is an up side down pin at the hinge securing it at the position u set. Thought that they are all the same. as to adjustment, it's a manual one. U just push the thing around. I wish its adjustable vertically so it can shoot all the way to the very front of the box. Haven't used it yet on my 14' box. hope there's enough throwing power the way it is. Erwin

tried hard to find the thread and picture for the Pneumatic caster setup. found this one from Croft trailer, pricy but will work. over $100

Can you flip the existing end-of-discharge-chute deflector? Fabricate one that will mount "upside down" giving the chips a ramp from which to launch, gaining horizontal travel?

I've seen this done on some Vermeers, IIRC.
