starting out in the trade in Canada

Hey there, just wondering what steps a person should take in becoming an arborist here is what I have going for me so far.
1.know how to operate fix and all safety involved with chainsaw work
2.have dont a small amount of rock climbing
3.know most knots and am studying more

I would like to start taking courses but here in Saskatchewan its tuff to find any arborist courses all help is appriciated.

Hi
Study all you can about arboriculture and treeclimbing (Treeclimbers companion, A. Shigo´s Modern arboriculture, Arborist Equipment etc).Get a job as a groundie in a good company, Make it clear that your goal is becoming a climber, keep pestering your boss until he sends you up in a tree.

getting a job as a groundie is nearly imposible in my area, the closest larger city is about 1.5 hrs away so thats out of the question.

Olds College in Alberta has a program, as does Flemming College and Humber College in South Central Ontario. I'm partial to the slightly more modern curiculum at Humber.

Probably 'cause I help teach there. /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

well I think the passion needs to grow before I run off to another province and go back to school, since your an instructor can you point me to any reading study material I should look for hopefully from the public library?

oooo....now, when was the last time I was at the library? Reading is great, but I am a huge advocate of rookies getting good mentoring. On the job experience with guidance. I know some self taught tree men who can't be tree men any more. Not that you can't think out a project, but having experience identifies those hazardous symptoms that the layperson wouldn't ever think of. Offer yourself up to Saturdays with a local Arborist. Thats how I started out 12 years ago.
