SRT

I don't like computers, but the library has a shortage on SRT manuals so here I am. I've been climbing for 10 years, mostly footlocking a doubled rope with a prusik to ascend. I want to ascend SRT. Let's say I were to compete in a master's challenge what type of set up could or should I use to most efficiently ascend. What is a good, quickly tied knot I can use to back up my single ascender. Also, what are some ways to tie off the rope of my ascent line. Remember I'm going for speed and ease. Thanks for any ideas.

Welcome to the Buzz GnarleyRad. (I grew up in San Diego, so I used to say gnarly or rad all the time). LOL!

Anyway. Boy are you in the right place for SRT stuff.

I don't work SRT for the moment. I ascend only. If I had the extra cash (I'd be more than happy to take donations from anyone on T.B.) at the moment to buy a Uniscender, I would buy one.

I alwas use SRT to get into the tree. If I can isolate a good tie in I'll send a running bowlin up with a long tail. I use a footlock prusik with a hand ascender below it. I also put my climbing hitch on the line that way when I switch over it is ready to go (faster when in the tree). I'm also using a foot ascender. also try handing somthing off your line with a bit of weight on the line you can really get some speed going.

Do you need to be tethered to the ascender as well or can you just be attached to the prusik? Also does the prusik work o.k. (i.e. grab) on a single line? I like the idea of attaching your climbing hitch to your line on the ground and sending it up, I'll give that a try. What if you can't isolate a limb? Thanks, Christian

I just use my prusik and my hitch. I look at it this way if the prusik fails I have my hitch to back it up. Yes the prusik grabs great on single line. Ok so if I can't isolate a limb I make sure that my tie in has a few limbs and I tie it at the base of the tree with a running bowlin. When I get to the tie in and have lanyard in I have the ground guy untie it. I try not to do this much because you are double loading the limb this way.

I like using a croll and a double handed ascender (which is tied to you somehow). Then I just footlock up on the single line. If you can tie a running bowline to a tree nearby it reduces a bit of the load on the anchor (the more you open the angle, the less load their will be). Theres alot of differnet options out there, I like this one cause I dont have a bunch of gear on me after. Remember to always have a descending device on you (grigri, f8, etc.) if ever you need to descend. Good luck!

it is a good idea to be tethered to top acender so you can put weight on either prussic or upper acender. so, if you need to decend for exampple, you can weight the top acender so you can slip on your decending device underneath. that way you are always attached to the rope in at least two places.
