Splicing Tenex Eye and Eye Prusik

I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I'm looking to make a 3/8" locked brummel tenex eye and eye prusik splice with an overall length of 28" center to center of each eye.

My question is what length do I need to begin with to accomplish the 28" length? Do the tails need to be longer so when they are buried they will bypass eachother, and last question, how should the tails be tapered to maintain strength, but not make the splice too fat in the middle.

Thanks
Chris

I had'em but I lost those measurements. Generally you can count on the part expanded by the bury will reduce in length by a third.

Are you going to bury the whole length?

Blinky is on the right track. You want to know how much each inch of rope is going to shorten when it swallows the bury. I usually make a couple of marks on the rope maybe 10 or 12 inches apart, then stuff that entire section as if I were creating a splice. Then remeasure. Maybe your 10 inches is now 7 inches. You now have your conversion factor and can make your real splices come out quite close to the mark.

Getting your overlapping tapers to produce a uniform final diameter is, for me anyway, a bit trickier. Most of mine come out a shade on thin side, which I much prefer to getting them too thick.

Hi Rick! Thanks for listing the Samson link. I have their splicing manual and this is actually the splice that I was looking at.

What I'm wondering is how much of the tails on either end can I taper to keep it thin, without weaking the splice, and how far should they overlap in the middle without making it too bulky?

Thanks
Chris

Since the Cardinals run game is less of a worry than Kurt's arm, I wouldn't overload the middle too much. Keep the DBs close to the line and play man coverage all day.

Shut Fitzgerald down and knock Warner down every time he gets the snap.

Those are the keys to the Steeler Super Bowl Victory.

Since you are making overlapping tapers, the object isn't to make a long, smooth taper to avoid an abrupt diameter change that would weaken the rope. Your tapers could be quite short since you don't expect ANY diameter change. But you will probably find it is easier to match the two tapers in the middle if you leave them long. Short or long, the strength of the splice should not be affected; after all you have still have all the strands of the cover to support the load. The strands aren't oriented as favorably as in the undisturbed rope, but they should still be nearly as strong.

I like making my yalex (tenex) eye-eyes with long overlapping tails. I will create the normal splices as per mfrs directions, but then continue tapering until I have a very thin tail on each side. Then I bury these so that overlap in the middle, have them come out where the taper STARTS on the other side, zero out the rope, mark the exit points, and then pull and taper the very ends...almost like I'm doing a 16-strand splice.

Did I even write that half-clearly?
