Fred- a fid is about 21 rope diameters. For 1/2 rope you'd buty like 21 inches if you were going for a 2 fid-length bury.

Thanks, Nick. Do you still favor the locking brummel for hollowbraid? This thread has me almost convinced to use a straight bury for crane slings.

Indeed- I prefer the locked brummell.

Crane slings? That will give you slightly more STRENGTH than the locked Brummell. If someone called me to make them some slings for crane work, and they asked for a non-locking brummell, I wouldn't hesitate to make them that way. It makes sense.
