spikeless palm climbing (video)

here's the system explained
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1TYxfgZzNA

i have started incorporating this spikless method to my arsenal of climbing techniques and love it. i can do most coconuts here spikeless. smaller ones i hand throw my throw bag and larger ones i use my big shot. if the customer wants it done fast and doesn't care about crown rot and all the complications from using spikes then i will use spikes. but im gonna try to convince them from now on to use spikeless and even though it is slower it is more beneficial to the tree's health.

Those guys look like they have a plan to succeed.
Some good self-promotion. One of my early customers told me not to be afraid to self-promote. You figure, if someone isn't sure of themselves, who else will be.

looks arm/ ab driven, more than leg propulsion.

Looks like they have some sort of attachment to the upper framework, but can't see how/ how strong.

I think that if I were working at that frantic pace, I'd prefer a steel-core lanyard for whipping around those saws like that.

Seems like palms are less cutting per amount of climbing that most trees.

Joshua,

First and foremost, much support for going spikeless. Its easy to see the ugly spike marks on the trunk of the palm. Much support for the enthusiasm and evolution.

This system works for you. You are young, strong, and have low hours on your joints. In reality we only have so many "miles" on our joints. I'm going to suggest that you use these "miles" more efficiently.

Some critique for further evolution.
Looks like you have a floating anchor point. I'd install a pulley in place of the screw links to slightly tweak your original system for greater easy. Way too much unnecessary friction, IMO.

You are essentially installing a SRT type line with your 7/16" double braid, and having the doubling force effect of the SRT technique.

Footlock and body thrust propulsion wears you out and will wear out your body. As Tom D said, legs for climbing, arms for working. Efficiency.

Why not move to a simpler, faster, easier SRT set-up. Using Tom D's suggested method of SRT anchoring at the base would work easily on a palm, since there are no branches mid-trunk. You can simply shoot a line over and get the end to the ground (tie a knot so you can't lower off the end.)

Add extra length on this end if you might tranfer trees and need some extra length to self-lower out in an emergency.

Pick up your rope bag, and spiral around the trunk of the palm enough times to build enough friction that your working end will not move, then tie-off at the base. Tom D posted a recent SRT anchor tie-off with a friction hitch, so you only need a long enough rope (3 times the highest working height, or tie two ropes together) and you have a ground lowering system.

I've been using an SRT system that has the capacity to emergency self lower on a VT hitch (but its not easy, only for emergencies, and pitch on the rope sorta negates its functionability). One Pantin, one VT, two handled ascenders, the lower one with a 4' sling for a foot loop for my other foot. This is cobbled together with existing gear.

Jerry Berenek put up a rope walker system on YouTube for ideas. I think Treebing has up a rope walker system on YT, as well.

These are more refined. I think that Jerry uses a Pantin on one ankle, and a floating Pantin near his other knee, with a footloop down and bungee up to a chest harness. I think that this system can be implemented with the friction hitch and minder-pulley that you have, purchase 2 foot ascenders and some bungee cord, and a 4' sling/ biner/ pulley.

Tweak the hitch to fit your rope, weight, and rope condition (wet/dry).

Rather that spending the dough on a chestbox roller immediately, I think that you could make a simple chest harness with your lanyard over your shoulder, bandolier style, with a pulley and biner, or just take about a 4' sling, twist it over to form an "X" with two loops to put your arms through, and use a biner or biner/ pulley combo on the front, capturing the two bights in the biner, and your climbline.

As Jesse indicating, RADS can work, too. I used it a lot before, but was not as fast, and more one-sided.

Keep on going with your evolution. Great to see you're stoked on it.

Jesse, that video was awesome! Suppose they are using the bottom of tree stands used for hunting? Or did they come up with that themselves? Seems like thats the way palm trees should be pruned when that method is possible. That was cool!

PS. JT, After I'm in position, I add a figure 8 and large ended double action biner (any biner that its will really work, but its good to at least lock), a la the F8 revolver system (with the F8 that I have, I use the large hole for the bight of the rope.

The RAD also works great , must easier on the body also rope walker is sweet on those long climbs .. Great to see that you are trying new techniques....

Later from SO-CAL

There was this baumvelo thingamabob, Italian design or something. Tree Bicycle. Sorta clamped around the tree, but moved when you stepped. more well suited to palms than other trees from the looks of it. $2500, no emergency descent option, as you are sorta hooked to the climbing devices.

Yeah those are hunting tree stands. The upper portion they are using with their arms is the portion you would use to sit on while waiting for game.

Thats my bro matt with his modified Kong Futura Hand ascender. Basically a bar is attached through the bottom hole and velcro straps attached so that your foot pulls it up.

hey Jess, I have a friend that has a pair of those seat+foot stand , he uses when he goes hunting .. They have them at the Pro Bass shops . I have some large queen palms that I'm going try on :-) These would be great when skinning wash palms ???

Later in SO-CAL I'll see you in San Diego Jan 29th RIGHT !!
