This first video is pretty funny, good commentary.

Second video shows a closeup, the tree in background must have been hung up when he dropped the second one.

Question for you Trees and Surf, My wife just got got back from Hawaii and was talking about the trees, they sound great. The one in question looks like roots are coming down from the branches, definately not moss, they are woody and go into the ground. Not a lot of info to go on I know, but thought you could help, THANKS.

That is pretty common on several banyan species here in Hawaii. They are commonly called adventitious roots, and generate from meristematic points along the underside of long spreading, horizontal limbs. The function to increase absorption of water and nutrients and provide support. One banyan in India I believe covers more than an acre of land using this advantage.

If you put a bucket full of soil and water below a root that is growing towards the ground, it will contact the bucket with soil and water and actually pick it up. The roots pull upwards on the soil, pretty wild.

when I was on my honeymoon in Maui, I saw a lot of trees that looked like they'd be scary to remove or work. Tall, skinny, spindly... better to just go surfing.
