some people I work with.....rrrrrr

So it IS summer time here in south Louisiana and the humidity is a bugger early. Very sticky! I have climbed for a while now and I don't let what people say about I am one of the best climber THEY have seen go to my head. I have seen where 20 year vets in the business have messed up badly. Well this guy I work with on occasion could not mix his cats with mine today. We had a large oak that we had to pull backwards after I took out the top. The whole time he was trying to tell me how to climb this tree. We DO talk through each tree as we go...I think that's the only way to do things safe, but this guy is 60+ feet on the ground trying to run me all over, and saying I don't know my cuts. He has never made a claim on his insurance on my part. I was so ready to leave the rest of the tree for him to deal with. He can't do it. Settled and finished the job. Don't know how I can keep putting up with people that try and treat me like I don't know what the .... I am doing, and we both know I do. Wow I feel better thanks for reading.

Man I can SO relate. I came from a very traditional background of roping and climbing and have made it my mission to try to work many refinements in both arts into my career and heart and it's done me well. People have also been SO generous to help steer me in the right direction and I've come out of pocket HEAVY to further it all. So once after a long briefing on the ground before I did a big climb to help get everyone on the same page, I asked clearly if everyone knew how to use my lowering gear and understood command and response blah blah blah they were all "yea yea yea" then I start blazin' this removal dig? When I asked for a block and my 9/16th bull rope their senior dude shouts up "You don't need all that! All's you gotta do is..." as you can imagine it went down hill from there and to make matters worse they told the refering guy that I wasn't any good. Man that was a bummer. Thanks for reading, I feel better.

Sometimes Arborists/tree guys, come across as if they are telling you how to do something (I dont think thats their intention either). I dont know what it is about the way we talk, or the way we are interpreted by others but thats the way it comes across. I find myself trying to help some of the younger guys on our crew work through some tougher stuff, they look at me kind of cross eyed and I know I have over stepped. We each have to know when and how to offer help, and when to let the guy learn on his own. If it isnt a safety thing Ill let it go, or give a gentle suggestion. I expect the same from them, that if they see something that I dont they will bring it to my attention. This is a team sport, we all need our heads in the game get the job done and go home. When someone bad mouths you behind your back thats just arogant (sp), but you will get that in this industry. Its the Nature of Man
ahhhhh.gif
(Ive never met an arogant female climber).

I totally agree with you but this guy is no arborist. I would even say that he has never been in a tree. The only reason I climb for him is that is the only way sometimes for me to make a days pay. We use my ropes because I dont trust his. He cuts his notch and then back cuts almost right on the top of the top cut and thinks its right. You are right but not in this instance.

I know what you mean, I didnt think I was lumping everyone into that harmless catagory. My old boss used to be the same way. He though he was a tree man, always talked down to me. But when it came to getting the work done, he didnt know the first thing about efficiantcy in the tree. He was stuck in the old ways. He yelled too loud one day at the wrong person (me) and I left.

Sorry to hear about your bad day. I can relate to that in my early career. But today, if that crap starts up, I kindly wrap up my gear get in my truck and don't look back. I would rather sell it all and live in a freakin ditch before I ever get talked down like I did in the so called "good ole' days". These days I just do what I do and if somebody likes it, then it's a plus. Be safe!!

Ya'll are my kind of people.

BTW I am going 8 years strong climbing and all around leading tree crews. I do take the back seat on the bus with one guy now. Just have to get insurance and I want to contract climb for a while.

I remember that Kristian. I didn't listen to them at all when they told me about it. I know the way you work. They are no longer in the tree business by the way. That was a bummer though and an example of why contract climbing can be a real headache. I avoid it, but looks like I might have to start doing some again if my phone doesn't start ringing real soon.

I wish I had the capital to just start my own, but I don't. Another thing that I heard about was someone pulling a top too hard a few weeks ago and snapped a top out with the climber in it. He is in the hospital still. I like to use my own stuff, and my own groundie as it is said here. My "boss" is more and more getting into gulf. So if we get alittle rain it messes us up for the next day. Seems he is just taking care of his pockets now a days. Was good when I started....kind of worried about people treating me right. I don't like the destruction of a hurricane and the grief people go through but the money is good. Might be my start this year. Be on my own after that. Then I will start a rrrrr about something else. Lol

Sounds like my last employer. They wanted me to take them "To the next level". Except, they didn't support it. All they cared about was revenue. Very poor pruning cuts, the worst chain saw maintenance and sharpening I have ever seen. I shoulda known when they hired me, the tree maintenance manager was a "landscaper", no tree care knowledge whatsoever.

Man if a handful of us got together and formed an operation...we'd dominate. Uncle Norm, dude you'd be a buck, ten a year and a company truck and account, Bing? whatever you wanted <throwing hands up>. Squirrel? you too bra! Dan? Name it. See you all at breakfast. lol

I actually did start my own thing. I work full time, for an institution (climbing), and do my thing on the side (10-20 hours/week). Got the chipper, truck, small tractor and all the cool little toys (and of course the insurance). Just wish I had enough time to keep up with all the calls. Got 3 jobs done in the past 7 days, and got 6 calls for work *sigh*. I tried to contract some out this spring but my customers said they would rather wait for me *double sigh*. I told them they might have to wait till winter. I really need a secretary. The wife keeps saying shes gonna help... But I dont see it yet

I would like to apply for the position. Water boy, comedy releif, brush dragging, saw sharpening, you name it I do it.
I have even been known to climb a little bit. I also do dishes, as Whiz already knows. This is going to be sooo fun!

Jesse, you can join anyday, you had me at "I do dishes" lol Shoot I have a hard time getting the wife to do them.

Let me know when you wanna start this up. I'm ready whenever you are. The workforce in Chicagoland is waaay down.

Wow all the last post could of come right out of my mouth! I've had two different crews call me for work this week that I turned down! Never fails show up there three guys and a trailer! Bid a 1200.00maple for300.00. Of course he says just go up to about 60ft and cut the 40ft top out and there gonna pull it over with the truck.....ha I had to point out the 22ft split that is about 40ft and the fact the tree wouldn't hold with that kinda load!......then I went back later that day to get him down because he tried it and got stuck!!!!!!! Lol but I also have guys the own mid size companies and have never climb and try telling me every step to take and always stops me in mid cut to tell me how I'm doing it wrong!!! Usually I just nod my head and keep going...I love when I tell them to use the porty on my stable braid and they just wrap a tree and say we don't need all the fancy stuff! I almost always bite my tongue unless it's gonna go on my INS claim or if it's gonna kill me or someone else! Contract climbers are in a sticky spot....I always feel like the calling me because they can't do it...and need me to. But the always just wanna blow the top out and be done. Can't really tell them off because you'd never have any work.
