so close to my biggest fall. no stopper knot.

A few days ago I was repelling down a bit on my flip line rope, then I reset on my climb line DDRT. I then tapped my prussik on my flip line and the rope immediately shot through. Had I not been tied off to my climb line I would have had a very significant fall. The bottom line is that I did not have a stopper not at the end of my flip line (or climb line). I have heard of a number of climbers who have fallen (two I know personally) for lack of a stopper not. Thank God I was spared that fall.

Glad you're still here, Olly. The best thing about that situation is that you actually took note of something that could have been fatal. I'm sure you'll never do that again!

It's amazing how every little bit of safety minded behavior adds up. I was talking with Kristian a while ago about the 'old days' (he's been around much longer than I). He was talking about how cool you were depending on how short you left the tail of your tautline hitch. The shorter, the cooler, and no stopper!

In some ways, it's a much different world, but in other ways...not so much!

Use a fisherman (double overhand)...the same knot used on the TreeMOTION bridge.

I like the hitch hiker stopper knot on my ropes and lanyard, kind of a not quite dressed double fisherman's.
Never seen one move yet.

An eye splice works the best, since a 'biner can be added to it for life support configurations, and a stitched eye would be a close second, in my opinion. All my lanyards all have an eye on both ends.

i have a figure 8 stopper knot on the end of my flipline, but i sometimes find it undoing it self during my climb. what do you use as a stopper knot?

[/ QUOTE ]

I know 2 people who say they are aware of a Figure-8 roll out !
I obviously don't know if the knots were dressed & tightened properly.
I have seen LOTS of Figure-8's that were tied loose, and NOT tightened properly.

I now use a double-over-hand: tied, dressed & tightened TIGHT, 1 foot from the end !

Hi
this works really well for me. I was stuck in a tree for a very long time in the cold many years ago because of jammed end line knot. Eventually had to free climb to get my self unjammed.

This will slip and slide its way thru the crown and is so unobtrusive.
Of course I,m biased but it is what it is.Smooth and frictionless. I stictched the end one of my lanyards and on another I have the figure 8 smooth over.

Just puttin it out there as something that works for me and has lasted a few years and moved from retired lanyard to lanyard and so on.
Cheers

Spliced eye ( you can put catapiller and leather over it)sewn eye (leather fits over it) then stevedore or double overhand.
Thanks too for shearing, I sometimes forget a bitter end when I'm not going to be close to using the end of my climb line but I think it's a good "always do it" practice and this reminds me why.

anchor bend? pretty sure thats an anchor bend minus the last half hitch on the tail.

I misspoke, but no, not an anchor bend or a dbl fisherman's but a dbl overhand just dressed a little differently. Tie a dbl overhand and kind of roll the parts around and over one another and eventually viola! Hh stopper knot.

And also mahk Adams article addresses your question Maui:

Whatever it's being called, I trust it for this purpose.

Olly, why don't you try clipping the end of your lanyard to your harness? That way it isn't always hanging by your feet and it works as a stopper.

[/ QUOTE ]

Because it creates a loop that gets hung up on stuff?

When I'm using long lanyards I run the tail through an attachment loop on the back of my saddle to keep it away my feet on either side, with an anchor hitch stopper knot at the very end.

Not saying it doesn't get hung up on occasion too, just far less often.
