Tell me about your experiences using Skype?

I see they have a setup for iPhone. Does anyone use it?

Is it all free?

What is the benefit of paying?

I've read their website but I'd like to have some real world feedback.

As a college student I use the free download for skype on my laptop to communicate with friends and family and i have had no problems with it. the video quality is good, and really have no complaints about it.

Tom,

We 'Skype' with our Grandson (4) every day. My Daughter 'Skype's with him (and us) on her iPhone regularly. Works great - free ... if you don't count your ISP costs. I should note; you can upgrade ($) to get some special features - but we just use the free calls, vid & IM. LOVE IT ... TOTALLY!

- Jack

ps, yeah, Skype is now a verb.

edit: added note about special features

I use the free services from skype to video chat with my sister who is studying abroad in Germany. Sometimes we sit her down at the dinner table with us.

I really would like to see how it works on iphone because I put the app on my droid and could only talk with no video.. still cool.

When I was on my trip in Europe we used it to talk to people back home. One of the girls payed for an option to make unlimited phone calls anywhere for a month which was like $10 bucks or less. It worked really well. All you needed was internet connection.

Skype 2 Skype is free... Anything else is $$.. Cheaper sometimes. Need Internet connection. My mom lives in Ireland and I call her from my Skype app on my iPhone & iPad, crystal clear voice and video.

My very close friend is from Curacao, where his mom and grandma live. His sister lives in Scotland. He uses Skype to talk to all of them and has nothing but good things to say about it. I've only used the Gmail video chat which is good but seems more limited.

I use it to show off our new daughter with my parents, who live 10 hours away. It works like a charm, and if my parents could figure it out (with a little hand-holding, of course), anyone can.

Hard to believe it, but yep, it's free and safe for your computer.

I'm always waiting for them to put a cost on it, too good to be true right now - waiting for everyone to become addicted, then they'll hit us with the fees.

Like Hulu!

I have used it without the video feature to make calls through my computer from MX to the US since 2005. Works like a charm. I pay like $60 a year to keep a 'local' number. Friends and family can call me on a 401 number from the US for free, and I can call back to the US for a few cents a minute.

Skype is da bomb. My wife is English and her mom lives in Scotland, he dad in Newcastle and her best friend in New Mexico USA. Skype is free and it's a video conference. You need a fast computer with a fairly big hard drive, plus a webcam and speakers. It gobbles memory but is a safe program no germs. Best of all it's free and you can talk for as long as you want. Paul.

I use it once and a while and like most have said, for being free, its awesome! I have noticed if you or the person you are talking to has too many other programs open, it drastically lowers the video quality. Other than that, its pretty cool!
