Silky hand saws

I've had my Sugoi about a month now, and I'm thinking I prefer my Zubat. I got teh Sugoi mainly to get the leg scabbard, but I haven't found it working any better than the plain zubat scabbard with velcro to keep the straps in place. In fact, it's a little too long for my lower leg, so the shorter zubat (330mm) works better for me there.

As for the saw, I like the finer teeth of the zubat. The sugoi cuts fast, but rough. I'll keep it around to use on removals (with spikes, so it will be hangin on my belt after all) but when I'm pruning I like the nice, clean cut I get with the zubat. I also think the knife-edged hook on the sugoi is a little more likely to cause collateral damage afterthe saw clears the cut (the zubat has a smaller hook with flat edge).

just my $.02

Your description of the Sugoi is exactly when I thought when I got the Ibuki. It's just TOO big and cuts rough.

Maybe I'm just not man enough for those big saws!

you guys will prolly get a post from Adam soon...he just bought the sugoi and can't stop talking about/showing it to me. He likes how it cuts fast and is easier to use on the bigger branches. He carries a smaller folding saw on his belt for cleaner cuts and smaller branches. I like how on the scabbared you can replace the piece where the teeth rub every time the saw is removed or replaced. I also like how the handle has a little peice at the end to rest against your pinky finger. It felt comfortable. all in all it is a pretty big hand saw. looks cool though. sorry for stealing your post adam....actually, i'm not really sorry....peace

i have/had the sugoi.....really like the size ofit for cutting bigger limbs....it was far too vicious for small cuts though.
i say i "had" the sugoi, because today, when i was rigging,as the branch swung round it caught on the handle of the saw which protrudes a fair way, and bent the blade and broke the top portion of the scabbard. i think its going to work out cheaper to buy a new zubat than a new blade and scabbard.
so bare this in mind when you're rigging!!

It is nice to hear about the length of the leg scabboard, as I was thinking of trying the bigger one out. I really do like my silky zubat. The velcro straps that Nick "formerly from WI" (come back!) made for my black scabboard for the Zubat is about shot. Also, I probably would need a wider band of velcro (mine is about 1-1/2 inches wide - I think) as mine twists often.

I did try Nick's Ibuki (I think it was) the last time he was here, and while it would be nice at times to totally leave the 338 on the ground, I think I will stick with the Zubat.

My hands have been acting up again, and depending on the species, the Zubat works fine up to 3 or 4 inches if one wants to, and otherwise I will use the Husky.

Back to the zubat again.

I think all the serious treeworkers are like those birds that take all the shining stuff to their nests.
When I saw the Sugoi saw and sawed with the saw the first cut I thought mmmmmmm, think I must get used to it.
First I machined the little razortip off the blade and that gave me a little satisfaction. Than I cut off the loops where you should put the legstraps (that I didn't use cous I couldn't get used to the getting stuck behind twigs that passed my legs). And even after those modifications I couldn't call it mine.

To me it was a waist of about 80 euro's and now I am back to the good old ZUBAT.

One thing though. The machining off the tip of the blade was a good thing that I am going to start doing on my Zubats too.

I bought a sugoi. First time out with it my lanyard hooked under the handle and pulled it out of the scabbard. I can't swap sides with either the sugoi or the lanyard so I've not used it up a tree since. Anyone else have this problem?

Now it hangs on the side of the chipper for groundies to use instead of a saw to make half cuts in forked branches. Seems like a good use for it to me.

It's in my van, on the door of the chainsaw-rack collecting dust. Hanging there just to remind me not to buy all the new goodies. Not that it's any use in that matter. Even there it does a poor job because I just bought me a new 192.
