Show off them splices

Good guide to follow for splicing.
Cover all your basic splice needs.
My book just came in today...it's something about covering all modern splicing? Something like that. Hopefully a good book. I didn't know where.to start. We will see when I get home

I was playing around with knots recently and came up with this. I call it a Figure 8 bowline, since it starts out like a Figure 8 on a bight but ends up like a Bowline on a bight except different. Anybody know if there is a name for this knot?

If my memory is correct, that is a “Double Bowline on a Bight”. I learned it as a Boy Scout probably 25 years ago.

Your knot is the 'fusion' knot claimed by Philippe Bence in 1992. This invention was also claimed by Mike Karash, a fireman from Key West.

In the attached pdf you'll find a couple photos to learn how to tie it and some text in French... Hope you'll enjoy :)

Yes, that is it exactly! Until I hear differently I will refer to it as the "Fusion". This makes me curious if the international guild of knot tyers refers to this knot by that name?

I only researched the Courant skinny splice and have sold the Syderjack. @Tommy_B might be able to advise you.
Hey Brocky, have you tried splicing Teufelberger Fly? A friend gave me a well-used piece so I decided to try it with a slightly modified version of the SPlife splice. Because it has 11 core strands I pulled out 6 strands at mark C and then pulled the other 5 at the 4 taper points, with 2 strands pulled at the first taper point. The result looks nice but I have no idea how strong it is. I suppose it would make sense to use 5 taper points instead of 4, but it doesn't feel bad.

No, I haven’t spliced that one, have been meaning to get some since it first came out. If no bumps or thin areas, probably as strong, percentage wise.

I’ve recently come to the conclusion that the best way to splice this type of rope with Marlow’s method, is to tension the core strands at the eye and at a little longer than the buries. The strands being buried can start to push against, and bunch up the existing strands.

I have done two of them so far. I have bounced on them and nothing moves but there is a bit of thinness above the splice. Think I am going to try another version where I only pull out 5 strands at mark C and then pull out 2, 2, 1, 1 at the 4 taper points. Might make things worse, but we will see.

I found from doing the double braid SPlife that core reduction strand cuts should be matched with taper strand cuts to get a consistent core diameter.

I just tried one where I pulled 5 strands out at mark C and then tapered the other 6 strands in a 2,2,1,1 pattern at the 4 core reduction points. At the two core reduction points where I cut off 2 core strands I staggered the cuts just a tiny bit so that it makes a smoother taper. It looks and feels pretty good. This leaves more than half of the core strands in the eye, so it should be stronger than if you pulled 6 strands out at mark C. IMG_1840.jpg

The only thing with this splice is my eye spice didn’t get as good as I wanted it too but my buddy wanted it and traded me a silky saw for it

i prefer a locking brummel over a straight bury even though you loose a little bit of strength you gain some peace of mind.

I’ll have to experiment with that more than.. ive never tried that way yet. I wouldn’t mind losing a little strength. I usually go over board anyway.

The locking brummel is still required to be lock stitched. I have had a brummeled splice get weird on me because I kept playing with it without stitches. It will start to undo itself anyway, just not as easily. For how cheap the rope itself is, I don't hesitate to replace a rigging sling if I doubt it for any reason, and that gives me the most peace of mind. I like the compact nature of a direct bury.

1000000182.jpgSo I have heard it discussed, but not seen one done up, so I made a ultra ultrasling. I wanted a 7/8" sling for my recently purchased 3/4" block, and figured it might as well have a ring on the other end for a couple extra bucks. 10 pockets, 12' end to end, and the ring fits that eye, so the full length is usable. I know the bury is a little short, but there's the buried other end of the rope in there, and I will start low and slow, and see how it goes. Double lockstitch is because I like the look, and I don't think it hurts it.

that is a situation where a brummel would be good, that bury is way too short for a straight bury…
