Show off them splices

I put this together friday morning. I chose this design so I could have a loop in the end rather than an unusable tail. I had a little bit of a hard time with the overlaping bury. I tried to taper both so as to have a consistent diameter thru the entire section, it was just hard to get both buries into the same area. I wonder, if the traditional design is stronger being that this design has the weak point being the area of the bury where there is only really 1 leg of rope that can hold weight where in the other design there is always 2 legs holding with the exception of the eye which is basicly in basket mode anyway?20190331_153510.webp

This Thread has been pretty quiet so I had to try my hand at splicing! This is a piece of 3/8" DB that I had laying around and used it to practice on! My first attempt was on a piece of Tachyon and that didn't go so well!
Now the question I have concerns lock stitching. What is the best method? I see Sampson has a method using through stitches 90 degrees offset in two passes but what is the other method that looks like whipping and stitching combined?

It is referred to as a "whiplock", which is a combination of whipping and lockstitching. Check out this video for a demonstration:

Well, hows that for an answer! I appreciate very much your sharing this video! I actually just finished watching this (your) whiplocking as well as your Velocity splice video while trying to find the answer to my question above! You sure make it look easy! Hopefully I will get it after a few more practice splices! Thanks again!

It is my understanding that neither the samson lock stitch or the yale whiplock is superior. Does anyone know different?
From what I have been reading I think you are correct! I also read in one of many threads today where @yoyoman stated that during his break testing the lock stitching was irrelevant under load and was primarily to keep the cover and core from moving around while the splice was unloaded! I can't see which would be better if this is the case. I like the look of the whip lock better personally but I am just learning to splice so I have lots and lots to learn!!

I think as long as they keep the splice from loosening up they are all fine. And yoyoman is correct. The purpose of a lock stitch is not to add strength, it is to make sure the splice stays put. Other than that, it is all cosmetics.

The special whipping next to the ring also allows the eye to be larger for better stability.

There was one more picture from that thread.

It looks to me like you probably did not taper the tail on the cover and/or core quite enough. That is why you have the slight bump about 5" from the end of the rope. It also looks like the cover is a bit bunched up where it is pulled back into the throat of the splice. These little details can make a big difference in the bury. Tachyon is not easy to bury even when you do everything perfect. That last 1.5" or so is always difficult. But I would definitely climb on your splice and would like to compliment you on getting it done!

Please take the above comments as constructive criticism. I have done at least 20 splices in both new and used Tachyon, and none of them were perfect! I remember the first one I ever did had white core strands peeking out of the throat and would not budge.

Thank you @TimBr , this was my second attempt the first never made it to completion and made it to the yard recovery bin!!

@ARLO I very much appreciate your critique and compliment. I think your observation to be correct as far as the tapering of the core and cover. I think i actually messed up with the core taper and length. When I noticed my mistake I tried in vain to pull the splice back apart to adjust my core taper but it wasn't happening.
I used the 3-4 count on the cover taper and removed 6 pairs and to me the cover was still very thick.
Overall I was somewhat pleased with the end result. I did the whiplock following your video above and it turned out ok. It's amazing how tight the splice is and how hard it was to get a needle through the body of the splice!
I think when my hands heal I will cut it off and do it again!
