First time trying a ring and ring. I just did two eye splices using New England's instructions and measurements, pulling out the entire core and tapering the cover tails as they overlap. Is this the correct way to do this? How would you go about making a shorter length? This is 55" long using the splice measurements of 22" bury for each eye plus the 11" section where the tails overlap.

I haven't done any splicing for a few months and this hiVee was slightly used. Needless to say my hands are Feeling the Bern this presidents day!

Made this lanyard out of spare bits I had lying around. The icetail was the first time I've spliced anything other than stable braid. It came out ok but the eyes are a little looser than I'd like.
Then I decided to tackle the 16strand. What a pain in the ass! I washed the rope prior, soaked everything in water and it was still a biotch. I broke my wire fid twice on the final bury before I tried throwline. That was the ticket, but think I still lost most of the skin on my hands!

On the final bury with 16 strand, I use a small fid to start an opening where the cover exits and make sure it's tapered well and taped tight to the wire. Before I put the wire fid in, I'll pull more core out to make sure the fid is run clean to the side and not tangled up in the core fibers
Attaching the wire fid to an anchor cleat and pulling the rope back seems to work much better than anything else I've tried. It seems to let the cover stay bunched up and slide over the fid.
the same Atlas gloves that are so common for climbing work great for saving your hands from stubborn splices
