Shackle

Why reinvent the wheel?

Welll...no reinvention, just considering having a bicycle instead of just getting around on a unicycle.

Approval aside...what would be wrong with the chain idea?

OSHA has other examples of multiple approved options, why not this too.

You know, I have been thinking that some manufacturer such as DMM, CMI, or ICS, Some one would just make a shackle out of aluminum .
seems like a good idea to me.
What do you think.

I don't mean to be a pest but are there any thoughts on this one?

I understood the minimum rating on the shackle should be 9.5 ton

I have a 4.75 ton I bought for this purpose but haven't used yet. Unless my math is off this converts to 47.3 kN ?

Shouldn't that be adequate?

I, personally, like the shackle resting on the ball or weight. That's the way OHSA approved it. On some wedge sockets, a 12 ton shackle will fit over it and rest on the ball or weight. I've found most wedge sockets are too big for a 12 ton, so I usually just fit it with the 17 ton. I have two 17 ton shackles, just in case we need 2 cranes, and one 12 ton shackle. The 25 ton shackle is reserved for the hook. I like the bend radius the 25 ton gives the eye splices.
I did ask about a smaller shackle resting above the wedge socket and the OHSA inspector had 2 comments.
1. The shackle has the possiblity of getting hung up on a limb and saying there while the ball is being lowered, putting the climber in possible jeopardy.
2. He wasn't real concerned, but mentioned the fact that the shackle has the possibility of wearing the strands on the hoisting line.
