Re: Pacific NW storm (2006)
Done a bunch more storm work and got lots of pics since the last entry on this thread, but here's a couple from today... and text I copied from a thread about my new camera.....
" I just got home (6:45 pm) after working today, Sunday. Had a 100 foot, 32 inch at the ground, wolfy fir that had moved 8 inches at 10 feet, and dented the shed roof. AND the wind was blowing toward its 8-10 degree lean, 20-35 mph or so, which meant most everything had to be lowered. I lowered big bouquets of branches (speedline option wouldn't work.) It was fun getting blown around, but sure made the job harder. Some small branches that I let go ended up blowing 80-100 feet away, into a greenbelt!
There also was a 70 foot skinny fir that was moving a good 15 feet at the top, and had a 10 degree lean from the storm. Luckily the wind died, and I did it later. We topped it by 18 feet or so, and thinned it. It was on a bank, and its roots help stabilize the hill, so it needed to stay. Will need monitoring every few years but should be fine....I hate topping, but this was the right time and thing to do.
Then we sold another tree removal for a neighbor, a 90 foot 18 incher, for $500. Had the new guy start it, but things ere moving too slow so I finished it. It was in close quarters but easy. Had one more job to do, but ran out of daylight, and its not an emergency. Lucky I have more work in that area, as its a long way from home...35-45 minute drive is a long way for me...
I got a couple good videos with my new mini Canon A710, it's sweet, far better video than on any still minicam that I've had.. but the file size is huge...I'll get around to editing them eventually...they show the wind whipping me around pretty well...hey even an old man has to get some thrills in, ya know...being as the skiing ain't so hot lately...
Attached is the topped and thinned tree...It straightened up pretty well after topping--and the wind stopped....maybe I shoulda just thinned it hard....but I do think topping it was the right choice. I'd hate to see it blow over and take the wall with it, that it is just below. Hours earlier, its tip top was bent at a good 35 degree angle.. in the little breeze of 35 mph or so.
