SE USA drought

I heard on the news this AM that if the SE doesn't get rain in the next 120 days, there will be no drinking water left.

Any thoughts on this or reports from the TBers in the area??

yikes!
I heard there might be usage restrictions put in place for all consumers soon.

Mark, you might as well stop taking showers now, just to do your part.

So the environment may not be supplying enough water to meet the endless urban sprawl known as Atlanta?

Gaia fights back.

Justice, IMO.

Who's Gaia?

I don't think its justice, its just how the universe works.

Just think how harmless the situation would be if the area wasn't terribly degraded and developed...a long drought wouldn't be much of a problem if the population wasn't so huge and concentrated, and there were plenty of protected watersheds.

Justice is a hard thing to quantify or define. I wouldn't say any of the trees or streams deserve this drought. I have lived in Charlotte for 12 years, and we went through a drought period between '98 and 2002 that was rough.

This feels different and scary. I live close to one of the lakes along the Catawba river, and it is sad to see the level so low. This drought has definitely hurt the green industry in the region. People are not going outside as much, and feel that there is nothing they can do about the drought. There will be severe consequences for the trees in the next few years, and god forbid we have another large ice storm like we had in December of 2002, on the heels of a severe drought (weak, brittle trees)

Lord, I wish it would rain!

That fact that the term Gaia escapes recognition is connected to the reality of "suprize" when things come to a head regarding rapid and extreme changes.

There are two distinctly separate schools of wisdom to learn from - one is based on science and the other - commerce, pretending to be science.

Welsh hard rock miners used to bring along a small Canary in a cage to forewarn of possible catastrophy, hence 'the canary in a coal mine'. It has been replaced by absentee mine owners who hide geologic warnings and bend the truth about faultlines and equipment maintenance in order to get that coal out pronto, there are powerplants to feed.

Lake lanier water is being release at an about normal rate as there are contracts to supply water to floirda and south georgia. there are also endangered mussels or clams that are protected and some of that flow is for them. rivers, lakes in other areas that feed in to the south east are also showing lower levels. the area is making national news CNN and others.

we are all on restrictions, no outdoor watering is one. there are no other FROMAL restrictions, such as must install water safer faucets or items like that, it is really up to the indiviual at this point.

there is a lot of talk about development but it is not stopping, us on wells are also worried.

trees are in trouble - there are some that are going from green to brown in only days, no blooms on the hydrangas, hosta are done for the season also with no blooms. the last frost and drouhgt are not good. EZ is right, i am seeing more dead branches in several of my tree.

nothing sort of a week of rain may help.

As much as I hate Bush....

He has nothing to do with the drought. And if he does, I would like to hear your theory, Wilt. I know Gaia too, and one of the only things I worry about when I think about having children is what this world is going to be like in 20-30 years. Charlotte is in hardiness zone 8 now. Ten years ago we were 7b. A Red Oak dies in my front yard this summer. Dogs and Cats, living together, Mass Hysteria!!!!!

You can fight more than people in a war. In Holland we're fighting rising sea levels.

We all are to be blamed for the climate change, So IMHO Bush is too. The only difference between him and his clan is that he probably consumes a lot more and is willing and able to start a 'war' to protect what he thinks is worth protecting. And that's Atlanta NOT included

and the lower parts of New Orleans

Even the most harsh Californian state laws to get cars clean don't measure up to the nationwide Chinese regulations on how 'clean' a car must be (and I always thought the USA was a frontrunner).

That explains it pretty good - and to add the campaign rhetoric back in 2000..."There is no climate change".

On that premise, and the proven facts that his administration not just hid climate data from being published, he staffed the agencies with cronies that made damn well certain no funding would ever be earmarked for continued studies on those changes.

So yes, it's both all our fault but in particular, thru default...his.

Just wondering when the USA is goning to do sea water desalination progams for things like this. I live in upper NY and have seen in the years that I have lived here(all my life) a deffinate climate ghange. As for the south we up here are doing rain dances for ya(woooga wooga you wooga wooga yo please rain down near the bayou) think that it is not working but we are trying.
