Sawmills

Thanks treesandsurf. I wish I could claim to have milled it. I had most of it done by a sawmill that I sell to. The rest came from a woodworkers association that I supply with logs.

Persimmon

Not a monster log, but an interesting change of pace. This persimmon blew down a year and a half ago. Interesting looking color and grain. The fellow who brought it in was really pleased with it!

No job is complete without hitting a nail or two...

Re: Persimmon

I'm milling a cottonwood this weekend for a guy. Removed their tree this past week and they are going to use some sections of the main trunk to build some benches and an entryway for their yard. I'm excited to have finally convinced somebody to use the wood out of their tree. I'll have to post some photos next week.

Re: Persimmon

Thanks for the link to the bench. Always on the lookout for good ideas. I look forward to Wyoclimbers's photos! I'd like to see more of what other sawyers are cutting.

Welcome Post Oakie to the buzz. that is some nice milling , you too Bixler Hopefully I will have some Walnut milled soon been on the ground for 4yrs. have 2 more to come down to get milled. What kind of mill do you run Oakie? Getting the Alaskan mill for smaller wood , but need a real mill for the larger wood.

I run a Norwood MX34 band sawmill, and I highly recommend it. It is my third band mill, and the first one that really does what I need. It handles up to 34" dia logs, but I've milled bigger ones by quartering them with a chain saw. Track can be extended as long as you want. I know a sawyer who cuts 40' long beams on his Norwood mill. Clamping is flexible and works well for some of the oddball pieces I put on it (like roots and crotches). Very easy to tow and set up for milling, too. My mill is manual, but hydraulic log handling and power feed are available.

This walnut log had been on the ground for at least six years before I rescued it. The table and bowl are made from the root, but the stem had good wood in it, as well.

Tough to mill. I hit a lot of embedded rocks and destroyed two band saw blades.

What a couple of professional woodworkers did with the root...
