saftey lanyard

I have been using the 2in1 lanyard with prusik. The prusik seems tighten alittle to much and pine sap is not best on it .do you think the gibbs or the grillon would a better set up. I mostly prune and some small removals. /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I use a 2m lenght of NE Hi Viz with a karabiner fitted with a DF.The friction hitch i use is a VT with a micro pulley & find that this ideal for nearly all jobs i carry out.

Ross, like many others I've settled for a VT hitch with a micro pulley.
I attached a picture of my setup.
It's a 10.5 mm static rockclimbing line, 2.5 m long, which is long enough
for the relatively small trees we have here, but short enough to be out of my way.
The VT is 4-2 and made with a 8 mm line. I tied the ends together in a loop
just to make it neater, not necessary, double fishermans in each end will work
well.
I seldom prune pines and on removals I use a wire-core lanyard, so I really
can't say how this setup works with the sap.

If you still wanna go with a mechanical device I would recommend the
"Positioner" instead of the "Grillon" or "Gibbs".
The "Positioner" is made by arborists for arborists, is very smooth, clean and neat.

I believe the Klemheist is easier to release (and tie) than the Prusik. I now use the Klemheist in place of the Prusik for most applications.

I use a 3 over 1 Knut hitch tied diectly to my D-ring on my B'fly II. I also have a specially modified micro pulley that attaches directly to the D-ring. Even Tom D. thought it was a nice setup.

a friend of mine invented a 2 way swiveling rope cam. gibbs is going to market it. it should be out now. had a funny name like climair or klimeair. i have one of his early ones i use for really small trees that i dont want to take a climb line out for

I saw one of the Gibbs units at Expo. Very nice!

I should have gotten a picture but maybe I can substitute a thousand words :)

The shell is symetrical but similar to what we expect a Gibbs to look like. The cam unit has an eye on one end for a biner or shackle. The camming end looks a bit like a capital "B" set on its flat side. The bumps are the cams.

I use a 20' double ended double adjusting lanyard made w/11mm Fly, rope snap at each end, two Distels in the middle attatched to the Dee with M.R.screwlinks, with the rope running through the screwlinks for slacktending, true one-handed adjustment without the cost of a mechanical device. Pitch build-up? I just replace the Prusik cord, it's Technora/poly.

Cool. I use one and like it. Are you gonna replace your Gibbs due to wear or just to try something new? BTW, the "spring" (it's a bowed piece of wire rope) on the 'scender will fatigue and break after not many hours, but the thing works just as well without it.

Re: safety lanyard

Wanna know a cheap fix for the broken spring wire?

Take a piece of weed whip string. I think the piece is 3.25" long. There are different gauges. The wire in mine lasted about a year. The fiber string has lasted a couple of years.

I still wonder why they use two different size socket head set screws to hold the spring in place. It would seem to be easier to make only one.

Butch,

If you decide to go with the Micro, be sure to get the Micrograb. It is made with a bolt and Nylock nut instead of the spring pin which makes it a Microcender.

Re: safety lanyard

Nice idea, Tom. Whenever I get a 'scender from Sherrill, they send a bolt with it so you can go either way.

Lots of good ideas, ordered a new 8 lanyard and a 16 strand prusik ,with the micro pulley it should be a sweet rig. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
