Safety

How many of you that are professional and recreational climbers follow most of the safety standards when climbing for recreation?

I am curious as I have noticed quite a few pictures of rec. climbers without safety glasses on while climbing.

Just curious.

My rec kit is little different than my pro kit. On the rare occasions that I don't bring a handsaw on a rec climb you KNOW that I'll end up needing it :)

When I take kids climbing we use bike helmets because I can't find small climbing helmets. Same for safety glasses for little folks. If they're big enough to wear safety glasses they're wear them. If not, I do cringe, but the glasses will fall off or get in their way. Since it's rare that I take little folks who are beginner climbers into 'wild' trees I don't worry too much...just a little :)

It is tempting to rec climb without all of the safety gear, but if I ever try it, I feel weird, and unsafe.

Ten years ago, you could find me after work 60 feet up with a cold one and no PPE whatsoever. The good old days are gone.

On the subject of kids climbing, I just got my 6 year old nephew an X-Games helmet (decent padding and has suspension) along with some knee and elbow pads. We got him a little Buckingham Master saddle, and he is ready to get up in the trees.

I have not been able to find him safety glasses, anyone have a source for kid's safety glasses?

I rec climb just like I do at work: safe, safe, safe... The only thing different is having more fun!

Nick, I have never been a real big PPE fan but even just the ropes we use can cause injury. While using a 300 ft line in a big, freeze-damaged euc, towards the top I needed to reclear my line. Pulled it up and over a branch and let the weight of the tail finish the pull job. I was aware of the line speed increasing when out of nowhere the tail came around the branch and dead centered my left eye.

A fair amount of pain and a lengthy stay in the hospital. About 25 years of not being able to see out of that eye, until technology became advanced enough to fix the problem, could have been prevented by wearing safety glasses.

This scenario could very easily happen in a rec climb.

Excellent post, DSMc....rope end can certainly do that...my lanyard snap has come back at me pretty quickly, too.

Eyes cannot take much insult.

I use the same stuff for both although I ditch the handsaw sometimes for rec. I wear glasses for chainsaw and twiggy trees... and i don't climb twiggy trees fer fun.
