Safety Topics

This winter I will be running 4 separate 6-10 hour safety classes, on 4 separate days non concurrent. First Aid and CPR is due next year so that is out. I am looking for 1 more class topic.

I have the following:

EHAP

Rigging

Aerial Rescue

???????????????

Ground worker safety, chippers, saws, communications, struck bys.

Primary tree structure evaluation, checking for root decay, failure prone species, safety inspection of dead trees

Do you have a budget BB?

Bostons a college town, canvas a campus with a Kinesiology/Sports Therapy program and offer a grad student a small fee to observe a climbing crew in action, then come in to deliver a lecture and demonstration on avoiding soft tissue injuries, stretching, ergos.

If the student looks a bit like the young lady in your avatar, it couldn't hurt...

Driving in different weather conditions, working in heat/cold, gear inspections are a few off the top of my head.

You could have one for the safety leaders/CTSPs. How are their programs set up? New hire training, new equipment/procedure training, evaluations, documentation, communication between them and the crews, job site inspections, vehicle inspections. How is their safety culture? That kind of stuff.

Tie in points . Since the Itcc world champion had a flawed tie in set up ( 2009) Champ . Explain what happened so that other young bucks won't make the same mistake . If the reigning ITCC champion had a insecure tie in point , a novice would surely do the same . Where you tie in and how you tie in , is the key to climbing a tree .

looking at a tree service from an employers view. What makes the ideal employee. Might not be the safety topic you're looking for, but there are days when all employees could use a course.

SITE SETUP!

Including truck positioning on job sites along with crane positioning if one is being used. Safety when parking next to road (which way facing, with or against traffic) Equipment necessary for ground safety when chipping, and passer-by safety (other vehicles).

How to deal with spectators and pedestrians, best ways to block off walkways, roads if necessary, other potential hazards.

Moving objects in drop zone, covering or protecting those that can't be moved.

I think there is plenty to be talked about in terms of safest ways to set up your work site, for your crew and pedestrians. Also best set up for efficiency can easily be worked in there. Efficiency incorporating safety is very important.

Excellent suggestion Northwind.

Shoot, I'd fly across the country to learn from that... Heck, I just might go up to the Great White North too.

Dang. You guys have some good ideas. My mind is tired of thinking at this point.

Derrick, this would be valuable for employers to nail down and communicate to employees. And this is what the estimator should communicate to workers as well.

One thing I can think of as a tip for site setup is this; Call your customer, either before you leave the yard, or while in route to their home, to tell them to move vehicles. So, you don't have to do this when you get there and waste time.

Or, you don't and charge a little more for in the bid.

You guys talking about the branch loading on the biner or the whole setup in general?

Riggs has a great point. There have been more tie in point break in the last 10 years, probalbly due to the throw ball. I have seen many of our employees tie in to too small unions, especially if they are SRT.

Safety 101... a quick review of the basics that people forget...

Put cones out, protect the work zone...
Wear your PPE...
Safe work practices...
Review of chipper deaths, struck-by's, and chainsaw-related incidents, and what could have prevented them.
