Safety Signs

Hey,

Wondering what safety signs you guys use? I currently have a couple sidewalk closed signs. I have to purchase a trail closed sign for an up coming contract. I figure I should order a couple others.

Signage can be a pretty significant cost, do your research to find out what you need legally and but quality.

Here in Ontario we are dictated by the provincial government as to what signs are reguired, what size and colour they are and where to place them on a job site.
Not uncommon to spend 2-4K on signage to avoid issues and legalities.

We had a situation a few years ago doing some roadside work along a busy 4 lane road that involved shutting down one lane. I had actually taken pictures earlies that day of the job that showed most of our signage. Later on a guy driving by was rubbernecking the operation and piled his Mustang into the back of another vehicle that had stopped to make a left hand turn. He claimed later that our signage was not appropriate to the job and that he had not been sufficiently warned of the lane closure.
If not for my photo and our job site tailboard that listed the signage used we could have been facing a legal battle.
Sent copies to his lawyer, end of issue.

Ya signage is pricey. That's why I'm looking around. I can't seem to find any solid info of the type I need. I typically don't do any work around major roads and rarely have to shut a roads down. Lots of work in small residential areas.

Barricades are good as well. I was working for the dept of highways so we had proper signs and lots of pylons but a couple times that summer an elderly couple would come flying through the work zone. I had to dive into the ditch once. Then there's the pedestrians with their texting and headphones, apparently oblivious to their surroundings.

Contact the DOT to find out what the requirements are. I forget the name of the book in Ontario but it spells out exactly what the signage requirements r. I would imagine what ever state or province you're in will have something similar.

Having a small supply of signage on hand is always good. Don't forget that for larger jobs or for signing up job sites out of your norm! that renting is a great option. Use a rental company that has all the requirements for your state/province. The rates for a day or two are typically very low.

I think last time I checked here in soutneast Pennsylvania, I could rent any sign for 12 cents a day! Cones were similar and they would throw in sand bags if I needed them to hold the signs down. The rates are based on long term road construction where the signs are out for months, or in the case of Canada, any time it's not winter!

Just option.

That's a good manual for beating traffic tickets.. You should see the look on the cop's face when you show up with a handful of paperwork, photos, copies of the manual etc.. the last thing he wants is to be made a fool of on the stand and will bargain with you or just throw out the ticket..
