Safety Glasses Question

Hey guys, quick question about prescription safety glasses. At the last KYTCC I was told the lenses on my safety glasses must be marked with the ANSI Standard like the frames are. I've never heard that rule before, but went with it and thought it was true. So far, I haven't been able to find anything that saws one way or another. I know the frames must be marked.

Right now, I'm currently looking at Smith Optics frames and lenses and I asked them about the lenses being marked. He said they don't mark their lenses, but they pass the highest ballistic and optical standards today. I believe him in that respect, because Smith is a very good company who produces eye wear for the military, so I know its up to spec, especially for the work we do.

Just wanted to get some confirmation on this. Thanks everyone!

I have the Oakley Radar frames with prescription lenses. No markings on the frame or lenses, but the website confirms meeting Z87.1 for both.

Perhaps you could get a printed manual/document from the factory that shows they meet the Z?

I got my prescription safety glasses at WalMart for around $120 dollars, and yes, both the frames and the lenses are marked with the appropriate Z-87 Spec markings.

That is the regulation that the lenses must be marked. But I too wear prescription safety glass and am not going to go out and get them etched at the moment. It should be out with the new ANSI standards here shortly, but I know someone on the committee and it is the new regulation.
Have the manufacturers documentation that they meet and/or exceed ANSI standards for impact protection and call it good.

Is this something that is required in all industries? It would seem if that's the case then the manufacturers would comply. If it's only a requirement for us then forget it the cost isn't justified.

So it looks like its true. Is there some place I could possibly take the lenses to get etched at some later point in time? Or is that not a wise idea? I plan on carrying around documentation if I can't get them etched at the factory.

Get a box of contacts lenses for the comps and then have your approved safety glasses.

I got rid of prescription safety glasses on the job altogether . Best decision made for my eyes.
Actually helps alot to keep the stinging sweat from burning my eyes. Debris that finds its way onto the eye ends up quickly moving to the corners to be easily pulled away.
Also find the bar oil mist and exhaust is much less of a problem since wearing them.
No more sweaty, dusty, scratched up lenses to look thru.
Another good reason is the headaches I used to get seem to have almost disappeared. I think due to the strain from looking thru messed up glasses.
I'm sure all you other 4I's out there know the grief.
IMO I am pretty happy with contacts and well just prettier to.
