I am not sure how many of you know about this fund, but it was put in place to help fund research for tree worker/ climber issues and safety. In order for the fund to go active it needs to reach $100,000.00. Right now it is at $94,000.00. I am wondering if it possible for TreeBuzzto run a drive to gather donations from the members and sponsors to try to complete this goal and start moving forward with the research. What do you think?

Sounds long overdue. But we've been doing pretty good with a lot of freedom to innovate techniques and equipment. I'd hate to loose that to some dumb regulations.

So like Joe said who's doing the research, does the project have a website, and what are they trying to accomplish?

Yea I'd care to know this 3x myself. I'll be truthful, last thing I want is someone like Norm Hall, or Rodge, on my job telling me for 1-2 hours how I should make the cut, when in 15 mins I'd show them how to make the cut.

I*'m really sick of moroons making tapes to tell me how I should take twice to 3 times longer to do the same job.

Think you can do this?????

I believe that this fund is being created. In order to start doling out grant money the fund needs to be endowed at the level of $100k. This is normal for any sort of research fund.

Once the fund is endowed they will accept applications for research projects. Like any proposal the application will be reviewed and funding will be determined.

Right now research that is related to climbing/rigging is being supported by the TREE Fund. Take a look at what has been supported already.

I googled it up under tree fund or safe arborist techniques fund. www.treefund.org. Been giving out research grants since 1976, to the tune of over $6 million and are associated with the ISA. I guess I should read my Arborist News a little closer. It sounds like I have my magazine where EZ keeps his.

The TREE Fund's Safe Arborist Techniques Fund supports research into tree dynamics and risks associated with arboricultural work practices, with the goal of creating a safer work environment for people working in the tree care industry.

Research funded by the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund contributes to the development of:
• improved risk assessment tools
• better risk-management strategies
• safer rigging and climbing techniques/equipment

The safety of the tree care workforce is an ongoing research priority for the TREE Fund. Examples of recent awards related to safety include a $10K grant to support 2010's Tree Biomechanics Week, and $25K Hyland Johns awards to John Goodfellow, Dennis Ryan and Brian Kane for projects related to risk assessment, equipment safety and tree dynamics. Visit www.treefund.org to submit a research grant application or to see an archive of TREE Fund research projects dating to 2004. Research grant applications are accepted twice a year and are evaluated by a committee of researchers and arboriculture professionals.

Safety is always a concern (or it should be) for anyone who works in the trees. But for some arborists safety is a passion.
Kevin Bassett is one of those. Kevin is a tireless advocate for safe arboriculture practices and research to improve our knowledge of how to work safely in the trees. He's also a master wood turner, and regularly donates his woodwork to the TREE Fund auctions to raise money for the TREE Fund's Safe Arborist Techniques Fund.
In May 2011 Kevin launched the TREEFUN site on ETSY.com featuring some his most beautiful wood art work, and he is donating 30% of the sales from the site to the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund.
If you share Kevin's passion for safety, research and fine woodwork, support the cause with a purchase from Kevin's site at www.etsy.com/shop/TREEFUN. Or donate directly to the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund at www.treefund.org.

Thanks for the info Mary! Kevin is a great guy and his art is spectacular. I want all of it.

I have looked at this awhile back and want to look at it closer but I think, YES, VERY strong contender and will help arbs everywhere, nit just in one region, as well as rec climbers too.

OH BTW new TB Vid coming soon!
