Saddles: Bare Naked or Mr. Bo-Jangles

Location
NJ
I was interested to see what everyone kept on the saddles all the time. Are you a bare minimum guy going ultra light or you the climber that you can hear coming 2 miles away with all types of gadgets swayying about? Reason I am interested is I will get my motion saddle in a few weeks and was wondering what else might be useful to carry about with me. I figure on this saddle it will allow me to spread the weight out around the saddle with all the attachment points.

I personally am the bare minimum type. I keep just my prussik set-up and a karb with a webbing strap and a double pulley for redirects and other useful things. As well I have a 25' lanyard with a hip prussik spliced right to the d-ring. Last thing is my 1st aid pack.

I guess I fall under the Mr Bo-jangles category.

Handsaw, lanyard, redirect, rigging biner and sling, yates rocker, petzl ascension, figure 8 and biner, knife, 3 biners, and chainsaw lanyard. And oh yea, a pack of marlboros and a lighter.

And on some days you can add a digital camera to that list.

Lean and mean.
Handsaw, looprunner and biner is standard, plus bloodstopper kit with styptic powder for small handsaw bites.

Footlock prussic and figure eight if i'm footlocking, but the prussic gets sent down after i reach tie in.

And if i think i need it a second set of tie in.

Everything else gets hauled up if i need it

steve

Edit to add first aid kit

I climb with a 9' grillion on one side, a adjustable buckstrap on the other side. Buckstrap hardly gets used unless free climbing a pine or for clipping pole saw on it. Across my back from left to right I have: chainsaw, 3 loop runners for lowering (short, med, and long), figure 8 and Fox whistle in center, 3 more loop runnners for tying in and redirecting, and lastly handsaw.

Sounds like alot I know. But I use most of it on every tree I go up, especially on removals. Plus once your tied into your climbing line you dont feel the weight. I admit when I strip down the saddle to just handsaw and grillion it is alot lighter, but no more or less comfortable.

Hold on Blinky, did you say Jumar ascender.....the big awesome yellow one, the best ascender in the world!

Mine were stolen 4 years ago on a job, think it was another climber, took me months to save for them!

I loved those ascenders

For basics:
2/3 extra triple lock biners
three different length slings
Zubat and secateurs
Bent gate biners one on each hip for quick clips
small pulley and clip
First aid kit - big dressing, knife whistle, elastoplast.

Send the rest when I need it!!

Well first thing I have noticed so far that if you are someone that has concidered buying a Silky, go ahead and buy it. It is definitly the favortie so far in the group.

I am suprised more guys don't climb with a whistle. I didn't include mine being I wear it around my neck when I think I might need it. I had concidered putting on my saddle but was worried that it could break in a swing. Great for a communication systems when a verbal system cannot be accomblished. Same thing with my handsaw which is on my leg.

Have a question for Tom and Mike. Do you just have the longer lanyard because you do large D. trees or is it because you double it as a second tie in? The second reason was why I did. Figured it would be faster to just undo the daisy chain and throw the line around the branch then set up another system with the end of my rope. As well I feel that it is safer in the event of an emergency.

Nick how do you go about attaching your multi-tool to your saddle? I have needed to bring up my leathermen on multi occasions but haven't found a comfortable way of attaching it to my saddle. Now I just tie it to a webbing strap and it flails about on my saddle.

My DEDA lanyard is the end of an evolution. Instead of having two seperate lanyards or one long one, the DEDA combines the best of both.

The DEDA regularly is used as a double lanyard for ascending limbed sections of trunk as well as positioning into the perfect location.

You asked what was on my saddle...not if I carried a whistle :)

When I was at the ISA conference I picked up a name tag lanyard. With a littl tweaking and a layer of double face tape it is always available to use. Over the last few weeks I'v been using it a lot. Having it in the exact same position all of the time has been great. One less lanyard chafing my neck too.
