Ropearmour

To each their own, Boreality. I guess I can throw, "worth a hoot" but maybe not two hoots.

I'm getting one in the mail this week - I'll be sending it off to Lumberjackson in a couple of weeks/months depending on how much I like it.

To be perfectly honest with you, I wasn't making the distinction when I was reading your post- I was thinking about a throw bag. Since the title of the thread is "Ropearmour" you may have thought I was on your page, when I was actually not. My apologies.

I do look forward to seeing what this RA can do for my throwing capability. Thanks for the input - no diss meant, but it's like people's height. A lot of people "pad it" a bit. Like a 6'2" guy becomes 6'5" when you ask him.

Not likely you'll ever see it. I don't compete anymore and I retired from climbing last year. 35 years of climbing took it's toll on me. I'm a true 6'1" and 245lbs based on what they tell me at my doctors office. I have actually measured the height of some of my throws with a tape, so I wasn't baseing my statement on ego. I have owned a BigShot since they appeared and feel I'm better hand throwing. In my mind it's all about practice.

Your not buying it are you Reg? I've possibly got a gift for throwing. Just ask any kids who got in a snowball fight with me. Or even frisbee, if your not paying attention your going to get a head shot.

I've just never seen it done.
Heard it said lots of times though, but am also well aware of the tendancy for many treeguys to bull$hit about tree heights (not suggesting your one of them). When in fact there aren't actually any 100+ ft trees as-is in the suburban areas they work....let alone throwing a line that far.

All the same, I'd love to witness it, to see a 200ft reel run out.

Thats about 100 ft to the top of that crane/tree on the photo....and to quote Murph, would be 'beyond my skills' to throw that high.

I avoid the city as much as I can. My market is summer homes built into existing forest. But wouldn't Victoria, if anywhere, have tall trees? I spent a bunch of years on the island in Nanaimo and we had lots of tall fir up there I can't remember Victoria's situation though. I remember seeing more tree and landscapes guys than I thought was possible. Seemed like every second property had someone working on their yard in some neighbourhoods.

Yeah there's lots of tall 'conifers' in little pockets of the city. Go a little further out to and they near double in height.

Edit : Please dont add or detract from your post after I've already answered, it makes us both look confused.

And no I'm not on a mission to kill all the trees in Victoria, otherwise I wouldn't be talking ropearmour and big shots. You should say what you feel, I'm not offended at all.

I wasn't there to witness but I have heard from good sources that Mark Chisholm can hit 120' accurately with a throwbag. I'm pretty sure he did it in Italy in some Plane trees, or Stone Pine I don't remember. I also saw James Kilpatrick hit the illusive 100' throwline target when he visited the New England comp in 2009.

Wow 100' throws, that is truly amazing I truly suck at the throwball. I as a mere mortal stuggle with 50' so when I pull up to a job I give myself 2-3 shots max and then out comes the big shot. Don't feel to bad as it really is by far the weakest in my skill set. I have tried every type of throwball but I guess it just boils down to technique which I haven't mastered. Well I never need to go higher than 70' here anyhow.

I've nailed a few 80+'s this winter in some big sugars. When I was out west a couple years ago we were shooting for a 100ft on a douglas fir one day in a park, a few guys got it. That's a big toss.

Reg I changed my post while you were editing/attaching your photo, I was wondewring what crane photo you were talking about. Just one of those things. If you could read all my deleted posts or some of the stuff I've edited out you'd be happy for the delete button. Trust me. Sometimes it's like writing a letter I never intended to send.

Well, you have my backing at least to post your letters.

You can always appoligise later if you feel differently.

Personally I've read some aweful stuff written of me in the past, some I wasn't even supposed to know about....but at least I know where I stand in that respect.

And furthermore I wouldn't want to be judged on an assumption or misunderstanding....at least if people asked more we'd truly get to the bottom of things.

Anyway, the Ropearmour, its different, and I was/am just interested in hearing how others are making out.

Slip knot where you'd like your trigger, and I always leave the bead on the string even when pulling up the rope. Doesn't cause any problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

Picked this up in a thread a while back. Now it would piss me off if I somehow lost all my beads, even just for a day. Did I mention that I love the buzz!

Goes in between the weight and the slip knot which keeps it in place so you have more to hold onto than just the knot. Thought it would be useful but never imagined I would come to rely on it.

The idea is as old as throw lines! I used to use a similar technique, but beads were not cool enough for a hard core, in your face, crush your soul tree guy like I was then.

I used a valve stem cap with a hole poked in the top.

Looked way tougher

as a basket thrower, I could never figure out a good way to throw the thing effectively. For one armed throwers I think that it would be great. I use the Rope Shield quite a lot to get my rope past suckers and tight crotches.

[/ QUOTE ]

You girth hitch a split ring in the line very close to the treepedo... as per the first vid http://www.ropearmour.com/videos.shtml

My main concern would be safety.. depends a bit on where and with whom you work. I hate the idea of spilling lead all over the place, which is bound to happen with every throw bag.. Especially if there are children around..

Price is a factor too.. probably good for a contract climber or small outfit, but when there are a lot of people handling your equipment that have proven their lack of concern for it, what to do?

I saw a friend hit a crotch just over a hundred feet. My 200ft climbing line was three feet off the ground on both sides when we pulled it up. I think the highest I've ever thrown was up close to 90 but that's with a 8oz. bag and you better not be throwing into a thick barked tree
