Rope suggestions...

Been here a while
What are most people climbing on and what has held up the best? I know this thread gets started at least once a month so I thought I would instigate it this time.

Over the years I have climbed on The Fly, Velocity, Blaze, Poison Ivy, Poison Hi-Vy, and Tachyon.

My favorites were Poison Ivy, and Velocity.

The Fly sucked because it was like climbing on a rubber band.

Blaze seemed to milk a lot, the jacket didn't seem as tight as Velocity, and I seem to remember some durablity issues.

Poison Ivy held up great. I climbed on this line for over three years and was thinking it was time to retire it when my ground crew hit it with a saw and made the decision for me.

Poison Hi-Vy was a dissapointment after the great luck I had with Poison Ivy. It seemed to get trashed way to fast.

Velocity has been the line I have used the most and has worked excellent for me. It works great with all of the climbing systems that I use and I actually like the waxy coating on it.

Tachyon I have enjoyed climbing on but it hasn't held up as well as I would have liked.

I am tempted to go with Blaze because it is $100 cheaper for a roll and the special that Yale is offering right now where they throw a flipline in if you buy a roll of rope. Not that I ever climb with a steel core flipine but its FREE!

The Velocity has worked so well for me it is an easy one to go with again. I like these two ropes a lot because of their light weight and small diameter. Has anyone had durablity issues with Blaze? How has it held up for other folks?

Thoughts or opinions?

i would tend to really think about your climbing style as well as your likes and dislikes.Grab the rope that works best for YOU! and do not get hung up on the latest greatest thing. I have tried them all as well and to be honest i like the tachyon alot, but i have really fat meaty hands and im thinking about grabin an older 16 strand rope for like every day up and down stuff.maybe something to be said for toughness over weight? feel etc.Do you use a lot of hard ware, friction saver? all these things will come into play and everything is a trade off!! Maybe these days one rope is not enough.....different rope for specific apps?

I'd go with what you like. I've tried Blaze, Poison Ivy, Tachyon, Velocity, Fly, and some 1/2" 16 strand lines. And I keep going back to Tachyon. I really like PI, but when I bought it 5 years ago, I didn't like the feel right away, so Dad bought it off me. Now, after climbing with the skinny lines for awhile, I like it just as much as Tachyon.

But if you are looking to try some new rope, I'd check out the Rocket Rope by All Gear. As large as PI or Tachyon, but it's third core is twisted, giving it a really firm feel. John, at Knot and Rope Supply, said its even firmer than Tachyon. This will be my next line.

Tachyon has a second core as well. I always liked blaze it seemed to hold up well for me and I always thought I was rough on ropes. I started climbing on Lava about a year and a half ago and like that as well. But, I found it does not hold up as well as the blaze, for me. Mine also milks (which it is not supposed to), which can be a pain at times with the double splice. I think I will try the actual tachyon as my next line (I know they are supposed to be the same rope but have been told different dies can make slight changes in how the rope acts). But the ability to splice both ends out weighs the negatives for me. Sherrill says they will splice both ends of blaze but I dont know how the milking issue would go with that. Stick with what works for you, if that is velocity then thats what you should be climbing on.
