rope saver

I have several questions about the leather rope saver. Does anyone use one of these? I saw how these work in the tree climbers companion. Is there situations where one of these would be better than the two ring friction saver? Maybe where there are a lot of limbs together keeping you from getting the friction saver isolated over one branch.

I quit using them because they wern't very durable. I think that any of the ringed false crotches have many more uses.

Dan House makes a nice one out of flexible electrical conduit. Find his email in the Members area and drop him a line

IMO the leather cambium savers are great- in their correct application. the pros of the leather sleeves are: you can dump it from any height onto the concrete and not worry, they dont get stuck in a narrow crotch like the ringed ones will do.
The leather is very durable in my opinion. I have a saddle maker who makes mine. He cuts them out of real thick leather and adds a rivet at the ends. I have used one for a good many years with out wearing it out.
The pros of the ringed cambium savers are they will work in a lot of different situations that the leather ones will not. In addition the rings will add much less friction to the rope.
My preference changes with each situation.

A new favorite of some of our climber friends is the Dan House Rope Sleeve. Doubled Rope climbers are learning the value of protecting the tree's bark and their rope's wear by using a Rope Sleeve. The Sleeve is easy to install from the ground. Tie a slip knot behind the Sleeve and pull it up over the branch. Then pull out the knot to set the Sleeve. Do the same to retrieve the Sleeve when you remove your rope. In addition to Doubled Rope climbing, use a Rope Sleeve in place of a pulley to haul gear, or on permanent rope placements, such as a swing. The Dan House Rope Sleeve is 30" long and will bend around a limb as small as 6" diameter. Made of flexible conduit with a protective ferrule at each end.

Re: Dan House\'s Rope Sleeve

I made a rope saver from leather then lost it.
I needed it on a cable repair job to get my bod up to where I could reach the cable and my friction saver is a little too long.
I ended up using a piece of rubber hose and it worked ok but I had better luck using vinyl tape to secure it to one side of the rope.
I just found the leather rope saver a few weeks ago.

This might also work for a similar application.
A piece of pliable plastic with two holes to pass the rope through.
