Rope Runner Pro

Location
Lone tree
I plummeted from about 32 feet atop a cottonwood tree here on a job I was working for a fellow business I sub for.
On this day I performed all the inspections of the tree and my life support gear as I always do. I threw my line over the main lead and ascended the tree. Before ascending I jumped and tensioned my line as I noticed a limb which could snap and drop my lead maybe 3 feet before it would rest into the crotch I had aimed for. The jumping and hopping and lode forcing did not snap this limb so I decided to ascend telling myself that a 3 feet drop would be negligible if it did happen. Rope runner preface: prior to this day I had tensioned the pins in my roperunner to fit my rope "yale xtc fire" to ensure minimal slide and maximum rope grab. Even ascending since the first days I set it was always a little difficult as the device was set to be more grab bias than slide bias. These tests and tunes ultimately resulted in my comfortability in the tree and I began to use the device as I had once used a prusik and rope wrench. Back too the day I fell... this day was particularly peculiar as the yard had a wooden ledge I used as a 4 foot drop to further test lode my system and ran and jumped off the ledge to shock the system. I remember running on this ledge like mission impossible. It was all in the name of safety. I ascended the tree too the near top reached for my scare strap and as I whipped it towards the trunk my arm movement broke the little limb preventing my climb line from sitting flush with the leader. At this point I knew I was going for the swing of the distance between my rope and this lead, i kicked off the tree, uptook an arms length of this slack and prepaired to land feet towards the trunk I was falling from. Expecting only about 6 feet of drop I was surprised and confused. My device, the roperunner did not grab my rope at all. As if the 6 foot drop got it sliding and the device wouldnt grab. I hit the ground almost instantly before I could think. My roperunner wad still connected and all pins all settings all rollers were on the rope properly and I was in the lawn with a broken, bruised, and torn lower body. My spine is fine. My head is fine. I am extremely lucky. I have a groundsmen that witnessed and described my fall as
Full speed until the last 5 feet where it sortove locked on the rope and slowwed me down just before all the worst could happen.
Has anyone experienced roperunner of any year make or model failing them. If so please PM Me!
Also describe to me any theories or legal support you may have for this situation. I am self employed and my workcomp does not cover my own butt. As I entered the lawn feet first my femer slid over the top of my knee cap thus really damaging the short term and long term functionality of my knee. Essentially my knee went inward and backward.
I am hoping to make sure this never happens to anyone Ever Again!!! This is the device at the bottom of the rope I disconnected from my harness and then went too the hospital.
Sorry for deleting the image guys im going to probably take this to court so Ive been advised I should remove the image.

Absolutely terrifying, man. I posted a video a day or two ago of my Rope Runner Pro making a weird chirping sound in a tree. Nothing like what you experienced but it freaked me out and made me wonder about the consistency of the device.

From what you describe I can imagine that the device simply never tension on the rope. It seems to need/require a taught line to engage with. In your case, the line was momentarily slack up top and at that point the device just slid down the line.

I'll take some time in my shop this weekend to try to recreate (safely) your horrible accident, seeing if I can get my device to reproduce it.

A few weeks ago I bought one of these backup devices https://amzn.to/2MMtOCD to save me in the even that my RRP fails. I haven't figured out a way to integrate it on my line yet without the RollnLock getting in the way, but it seems pretty essential to back up any single device that can fail.

I’m getting crotchety again- if a chirping slic pin freaked you out, you shouldn’t be using the device and are unqualified to give a noteworthy opinion about the device’s functional integrity.

Really glad it wasn't fatal. The adjustment looks wide open. Could it have worked itself open? On a similar note, I've had branches, flip lines, rigging rope, chainsaw lanyards come across just right to break the tension on any mechanical, but never enough to open it wide up and send me further than a heart leaping 6" or 1" jolt.

I would have to put a similar size rope in and see what happens when it is opened up to it's max. That line is a pretty large diameter, if I can remember right. 11.5 or so?

Here's hoping for a successful recovery @Haan - that really sucks.

Will your regular health insurance cover the accident? I've called and asked mine if it would, and they've told me yes. If they said no, I'd pay for worker's comp on myself.

You might check into the fallen families fund for assistance. I know nothing about it except I've see solicitations for donations through treestuff

Please keep us posted on any findings - whether the device was faulty, freak accident, or even it it was user error (as hard as that could be to admit if that is the case. I know I'm not bullet proof and want others to learn from my mistakes).

Oh man that’s terrible dude, keep us updated on everything of Notch-Sherrill has been notified etc... one thing is that ropes not one of the approved ropes for the RR plus From what I can see in my RR manual. @bonner1040 keep us up to date on your health. I haven’t had any issues with mine I use it with Drenaline, haven’t had any slippage

Thank you man. Let me know how your tests go. Im very interested to see if we can recreate this.

Your original story included a branch contacting the RRP. That bit is missing in this version. Reason?
At no point has my story explained a branch touching rrp. The only branch at play was on my
Climbline above my lead.

I thought Yale XTC fire was 1/2"/13mm. Should be relatively snug, even with a wide-open RRP - I'd think, at least.

Sorry I do not understand your question. If you could rephrase that would be great.
I came in hot, let me pivot. I’m sorry to hear of your incident, and hate that you didn’t have any coverage in place to absorb the losses I’m sure you’ve faced.

My initial beef was with yet another thread advertising a device failure when such a failure hasn’t been proven. I’m also curious why you’re only reaching out now, almost six months afterward? What avenues have you been pursuing up til now?

First off - I'm glad it wasn't worse and hope for a full recovery.

I wonder though - why you kept the tie in that you felt was sketchy? Seems that would be the "guilty" party in all of this. Did you grab for your rope at all while falling, possibly releasing the device and not realize it? I don't believe they advertise this as having an anti-panic function meaning that when it's open - it's open.

I have experienced the RRP being reluctant to grab at times. It happens when I'm close to TIP and trying to get a bit closer and it slips down.

Thanks Crimson!
I haven't and I did get it covered in pine resin a while ago.

I should say I feel terrible for the op and wish him a speedy recovery. It reminds me of the dangers we face and reinforces the sense of community.

Take care.
