I bought a rope retriever to help out with the age old question. I've got my rope there, now how do I get it back?
Honestly, I love it! I like to free climb more than ascend on a rope, so it comes in handy for getting the next out of reach limb.
The one I got has a nice aluminum telescoping shaft [emoji6] and seems to be pretty durable. The only issue I had with it was the tip...
The retriever came with a hook screwed in the end, much like a hook you would hang towels from. This was great for retrieving, but would never in a million years help to advance a line, monkies fist, anything. I unfortunately bent, and subsequently broke the hook trying to get it to work.
The retriever sat unused for a bit. Then a day ago, I had an urge to fix it. My forman had told me of a product he had seen like mine but with a flexible tip. I went in my garage to find my small pipe cutter and looked around for options. Lo and behold I saw some wire, and thought to look for heavy gauge. I found a short spool of household tri wire, exactly the same diameter as the hole in the tip pipe!
I cut the plastic insert portion of the tip off with the pipe cutter, and inserted the coated tri wire sheath and all into the tip. Then I used the pipe cutter to make a crimp on either side of the tip pipe to hold the wires in place.
I am pretty stoked on this fix. I hope you find it handy.
