rope placement while blocking down a trunk

Re: Dangerous Technique Alert!!!

Leon/Rumination.

This is now a genuine question;

Would you be happy to leave that tree with the notch in it for 1 week/1 month/1 year?

at what point would you consider it unsafe?

Grover, why you arguing all the time?

Readers see the case for and against, that's it, we've done our job.

Re: Dangerous Technique Alert!!!

As Laz says, this technique is best suited for the times when a large saw is used to make the cut. All along this has been a discussion about a technique that is used rarely with a LOT of qualifiers. NOT a routine technique.

The times that I've done this is where I would be using a saw with a long bar, over 28" and a power head in the Stihl 066 weight. Standing just in spikes to make the cut is awkward. Having an upper rope to pivot around on saves a lot of energy. when I've been on just spikes I have to stop and start every time I move.

Leon's picture has always given me a chuckle :)

Re: Dangerous Technique Alert!!!

In addition to making the wedge cut easier with large saws being tied in overhead makes it a lot easier to rig the block and rope when chunks of the spar need to be lowered.

I will continue to use overhead srt on a spar at my discretion.

Great discussion!

OK, point taken, I'll stop now.

I don't think that this is a technique that will get 100% approval from all climbers. For me, I do it when I feel it to be the best choice for that job. I don't feel a need to do it all of the time, or in smaller trees. But, why stamp it as "dangerous"? (BTW, I changed the title back to it's original title).
