can anyone tell me what this is? Seems more stiff and waxy than any tenex slings I've had my hands on... but I guess I don't know for certain how to tell different between tenex, tenex-Tec or even amsteel, thanks

Looks like tenex tec to me. Possibly the 3/8 red?

If it's half inch it's just like tenex tec. I got the 100' of the same stuff in a bag of rope not too long ago, but long enough I can't remember who makes it. A Canadian company I think. Just rated slightly less than tenex
