Root barrier for sidewalks/street trees

As nice as those trees look, I would beg the city to just mold in some more cement to smooth the angles out
Bowling Green Ohio has done some FlexiPave over areas that looked like that to preserve trees, but keep safe sidewalks... About 10 years in and last I heard they are doing well. The advantage is you don't need to excavate as much.

We were supposed to have a workshop with arborists, urban foresters and civil engineers to discuss and learn...but COVID hit right when that was scheduled. Then the city forester moved on. That's a good reminder...new Forester has been there long enough to be settled in a bit - we should try to arrange that again!

Some company in Seattle is installing shredded rubber.
Like the playground matting. Not sure if the brand name is flexi pave but I’m guessing it is.
Unfortunately it’s become so popular that they are paving entire tree pits, right up to the trunks.
I can’t see this doing any good, as I’ve seen those stupid recycled rubber prefabricated mulch rings abandoned and girdled into trunks.
Time will tell and I’d have photos but I avoid the city at all costs

They didn’t involve me with the decision to remove the trees. I did mention just leveling the panels but no go.

They are removing the trees that have heaved up the panels 2 inches and up.

Let me know if this gets rescheduled!
